I've a sneaking suspision my thermostat is sticking open, on a morning at 5am when I'm going to work it is now taking 10 mile for the temp gauge to get to halfway, then as I go down a long downhill section its dropping down to quarter? Then on the flat it is visible to see it going from half to just under, I had to put one on my old petrol x5 but with that it was never getting anywhere near half and running so cold that the lpg system never cut in so was ver noticable, I've also seen a 2-3 mpg drop? Does the 3.0d not have the egr themostat as well like the 320d e90s or just the main stat, thanks

I'm on my phone but from that edited post it would seem there is one, I think from my temperature guage activity I will replace the standard stat first, I read about the other stat when looking into buying an e90 where people had massive drops in mpg but no explanation but then again with them lacking a temp guage on the dash its easy to see how you could miss what's going on!

Definately got something up just done light to light on 70 litres of fuel, which is 704.54=15.41 gallons 382miles15.4=24.8 mpg and that's a mix inc 150 miles on motorway!!

thaught of something else today tell me if im been daft but since it was stood for 5 weeks i developed al sorts of faults brakes binding/ discs coroded spurious error messages, could the viscous fan coupling of siezed thus running the fan constant or do they go constant on the bmws??

Viscous coupling type on the engine side with an added electric one on the forward side. The viscous one would certainly generate some drag if running all the time. Might be enough to take that sized bite out of the mpg....

new developement today so im thinking viscous fan, as if left to idel it will get the guage to very near half and id driven for around 40miles anyway if i sit and rev it to 3-4000 rpm you can physically see the guage drop before your eyes and after 30secs of reving its back down to 1/4 or even near the blue, despite the car been warm, on my other x5 when the thermostat went it did get up to temp and stop at temp just took longer than normal, so i dont see how this could be the stat as after a 40 mile drive it would be warm even if tthe stat is stuck open, also i waited until the car was cold started and the fan was going round, a mechanic said at this point when cold you should be able to stop the fan blades with your hand, so i didnt fancy it so i used a piece of wood and although i did get it to stop eventually it took a hell of alot of doing, im also assuming that even when the viscous coupling is engaged that it is possible with force to stop as ive done , sorry for the long post but im losing 3+mpg and ive done 700miles this week so its a little annoying and soon going to start costing if not sorted, thanks

nope left the car all night and tryed the next day, stopped instantly with a rolled up newspaper, so going to get a thermostat and an egr stat i think

For future reference, a carrot (not frozen

) is a useful tool for testing a viscous. If it dices the carrot then the viscous is locked. If the blades stop then the viscous is not locked.

Now that's a DIY test and a half
viscous if it works ...vicious if it dices...I've only a cucumber in the fridge...will that work

bumping this as I'd like to know more about the diesel thermostat. It's bugging me now as it hovers between 10 to and 5 to with a once a quarter flukey trip to dead centre. Even though real oem shows what it looks like I forsee a lot of bts on the floor and probably beyond my skills.
The heating in the car is woefull and i's probably harming the MPG and engine.
1) Has anybody done it on a Diesel E53 and how hard was it, or
2) Wht's the likely cost ALL IN to get it replaced as it looks more than a 2 minute job like an old Capri of mine
Thanks...Mike

another bump
mine stil rarely gets past the tick at 5 mins to dead centre
Has anyone ever tackled this and how bad was it?

Mine always sat a fraction below dead centre. Is the car warming up? Is the heating etc working OK?
