Radio upgrade & keyfob help

Hi I have a 2001 X5 with the original "business" radio. It has the usual dead pixel problem and instead of a repair or a £700 new system would it be possible to fit an original unit with the screen from a newer model ?
If so when did they change from the early ones to a screen and what parts would I need.

as for the keyfob, when I got the car it came with 2 keys, none of which worked the remote lock/unlock or any other functions but both open and start the car. The seller had a key made and that had the same problem.
I took the car to the dealer who supplied the key and he tried to pair up the keys to no avail. He tested the keys and said they were giving out a signal.
I have tried the various and well documented turning the key, holding the lock button and pressing the other three times, but he sat in the car, tuned the ignition on/off, got out, locked/ unlocked the car with the key and got back in. Does anyone know the exact process?
I have tried un hooking the battery (not easy with a 75L LPG tank sat over it) to reset everything, no luck with the keys but it did solve the electric fan constantly on problem.
Checked fuses,
Checked connections on the receiver module in tailgate (didn't even know about the manual tailgate opener in the back).
Made  up my own pairing sequence, ign on/of 37 times in quick succession, swear, press lock unlock tailgate buttons 11 times each, swear, switch on hazard warning lights ! but that didn't work either.
But apart from that things are great and all is well'ish.  :P

You probably forgot to be upside down and have your right eye shut!!  See post #8 in this thread for key programming.  Two ways to do it, the second one worked on mine. :)

Hi, I had the same problem with the key fob issue, eventually had the lpg tank removed, took it to the garage and it was a broken wire under the tank leading to the RCM.

X5Sport cheers for the help, when I told the wife i had to do it 5 times very quickly and press some buttons she called me Mr Grey and went upstairs ?
Anyway tried the sequence to no avail but the guy at the dealers said that you can usually "hear the car trying to pair up" but there is nothing, not a click, so that takes  me to kellyleekyle's theory and it had crossed my mind about the RCM so Ill check for power to it.
All good fun eh!
On a different note my mate who sold me the X5 asked me if I had done the 10 second test, putting it in sport mode and flooring it for 10 secs. Now don't get me wrong i like the 4.4 power and it does come in handy pulling out into traffic and overtaking but I did have to tell him that in normal mode on LPG it goes quickly enough for me. Any ideas on how fast i would be travelling after 10 secs flat out???
