OMG last night i thought i was a gonna

There i was, sat in the car waiting for hubby to come out of the shop, engine running when all of a sudden white smoke just engulfed the car, I couldnt see anything, just a clould of smoke. well i thought it was on fire, Having been in a mini that set on fire years ago and seeing how quickly the car burnt out, I got my usually slow booty out the car quick sharpish and ran ito the shop shrieking at hubby the car was on fire. he came and turned the engine off, decided it wasnt on fire , lifted the bonnet and stem/smoke kept billowing out.
also red coloured water was running down the street. (coolant i think) well he called the AA who came and decided it was more than likely the water pump had failed, the coolant was empty even though we had recently filled it up. he put some water in and told hubby to drive to nearest garage and hed follow him. twice on the journey the car shut down totally, then restarted. he got it to the garage and im awaiting their verdict.
If it is the water pump, any ideas of costs for repair?
Im starting to think this car dosnt like me

if its just the water pump should be a couple of hundred max, you just need to hope you havnt done the headgasket/cracked the head

Eeeek!! I know what you mean about how fast cars 'brew up'. Nasty shock, and as said let's go with the pump only being shot....

.
If you want to know what needs doing then
this DIY from our friends on Xoutpost tells you.
Be around £100 plus VAT for the pump and then labour, coolant etc etc to put the car back to normal. Looking at the very detailed DIY there's a fair bit to do to get at the pump, but should be a straightforward job..

Hi, what I don't understand was there was no warning at all, nothing lit up on the dash, I'd drove the car all day and everything was fine, just parked up and then all hhe smoke started, wouldn't there be warning signs if the head gasket was knackered?

When I took it into the garage and gave him the sheet the AA gave me the night before ,with his findings regarding the water pump and told him to call them as I'm covered up to £500, the indy said it wouldn't cover all the costs? So looks like he's thinking big bucks .

that seems expensive if he only changing the waterpump that should easily be doable for under £500, pumps £100+vat, coolent £15-£30(non bmw) other bits really £200 all in max, £50p/h labour gives him 6 hours to do it, i havent personally done one on an x5 but on a 328i i had it only took me 1/2 a day and im no pro! so i should think he could do it faster than that or hes a very high labou rate rivaling bmw

Or he's trying to rinse as much out of it as possible.

Urm got me thinking now, he said it wouldn't be ready till end of next week, he hadn't even looked at it at this point, I just thought they must be busy, didn't think it may be to charge me more, think I'll call Monday for an exact quote, if it's daft I'll get it moved to my usual garage.

Hi, just heard from garage it's the radiator and not the water pump that's gone, they said AA have told them to strip the car and give them a quote, so I still don't know yet what it's going to cost. Any ideas guys?

I had the waterpump changed at the dealership and that was £525
