Quick question on insurance

Hi, this relates more to the younger drivers...

I'm trying to get insurance quotes as mine has been put up substantially for a non fault accident I did not even claim for.

Now iv tried lv, tesco who said they can't quote me because I am too young to own this car...??? Ok then.

Direct line, compare the market, Adrian flux et al are charging me between 2k-5k for the yr.

I'm 26 (27 on 17/09)
4yrs ncb
0 points and 0 claims.

Wtf???

I know this question has been raised soapy times but could the young guns suggest who they are with and what sort of premiums they got ( I know every case is individual)
Just to point me in the right direction...

I'm with elephant at the moment and it will be around 1450 for the yr in one payment.

interesting....

im with Elephant which is also the same company as Admiral. Admiral said they would knock £50 off to bring my premium to around £1400.

Im thinking that perhaps location has alot to with the premium?

Gazzi, Swift refused to insure me because of my age!!! Im thinking to try again when I hit 27 in a couple of weeks, whether or not that will have any impact.

I find it strange im being told im too young to insure on the X. 26/27 is hardly young? surely it should depend on NCB, yrs driving and points?

seriously p iss ed off at the moment.

my tuppence worth -
1. Most companies will simply put up premiums on renewal hoping that you won't bother with it. Part of the business model I'm afraid.
2. Just had my renewal with Admiral (up 20%). Spent the best part of 4 hours messing around (competitive quotes etc) and hey presto back where we started.
3. When I was younger, always went for largest possible excess -  had an M3 aged 25. The reality is that if you claim for less than £500 or £750, your premium will get hit for most of it and what you are insuring against, in my view, is what you would struggle to pay - write-off or big third party claim.
4. I've always found Admiral and their group (Churchill etc) to be competitive but never had to claim so no view on customer service.
5. I have a multi-car policy with Admiral - bit of a joke in that each car has an individual premium and didn't see any great saving. That's what I had to work through to get the premium down. They imply you get a reduction on the rather sensible basis you can't drive more than one car at once - as far as I can see that is a simple marketing ploy.
Good luck - it is a very imperfect market and consequently requiries a few hours work every year to avoid being shafted.

Elephant and Admiral were very competitive, my insurance was around £850.
but april 2011 i had an accident and was hit by someone driving on the wrong side of the road. write off, but i didnt claim coz he car was worthless and i didnt want my premium to go up.

elephant found out through the police data base and smacked another £600 on top, predating back to the accident.
if id have known they would have done this i would have claimed. the worst thing is that they are still working out to be the cheapest by some way so i cant even tell them to stick it!

is Privilage any good?

insurance is very high for me as well, they're the cheapest i've found..

renewal is due by end of month, they've sent the notice, not jacked up the price; except i have a dreaded 3 points on my license that i have to call and tell them about  :wall:

3 points is nothing to worry about. Most insurance company premiums aren't affected by 3 points, 6 or more however will.

Insurance companies have you over a barrel unfortunately as even if you had told them about your non fault accident they would increase your premium. My third party claim against the guy who left his handbrake off his work van is now costing ME and extra £125 a year for his bloody stupidness. It wouldn't be so bad of the damage cost him or his insurance company a lot but it cost all of about £400 for BMW to respray my rear bumper.

One of the benfits of age this car insurance lark. It can be so frustrating for you younger lads.

One thing that you didn't mention was your post code which has a huge influence on premiums. I live in a sleepy Kent village where a gnome going missing from a garden would be front page news in the parish council magazine. Now, if you live in somewhere resembling Bosnia then perhaps that's the reason.

The no fault accident thing is a complete pain but then insurance companies work on statistics and you are statistically more likely to be involved in an accident if you have already been involved in a previous accident; fault or non-fault.

Whenever I get my renewals come through I use the comparison sites (up to 3 mearkats now) and then go back to my current insurer with the best premium on like for like cover. If they match or get pretty close I'll stay, if they won't I'll move. It's all part of the game.

Insurance is a necessary evil but, be honest and get the best cover you can afford because when it comes to making a claim you'll be glad you did. £1000 now to cover a £15k car when it's written off is small potatoes.

I have accpepted that postcode has a large part to play, i do have a greater London postcode, although its not crime ridden.

I understand statistically i am more liley to have an accident however i do believe circumstances need to be taken into account.

I was driving on a country lane, about to take a right turn. A 4x4 two cars behind gets impatient, drives on the wrong side of the road to over take 3 cars in one go and ploughs into the side of me when i was making the turn. its ridiculous.

My dad just got hit by a coach driver who veered into his lane on an A road, Admiral have bumped his premium up as well.

My excess is already £750.

The insurance market is a loss market and has been for a while now. Boguse claim and the insurgence of personal injury claims has made it a very volatile market.

It just annoys me that I have a clean licence, never claimed, have decent NCB and sorth yet my insurance is rising yr on yr.

When i was 17 the incurance company advised me that it will get easier at 21, when i was 21 they advised me it would then get easier at 25.... turning 27 and still waiting for my first insurance decrease!

I had same as you 21 then 25 etc and never any better, but in realation to your accident and living in country it is as much your fault as the car that hit you as unless the road had double white lines so the car shouldn't of been over taking you should have checked your mirror before turning right!  Rear view mirror doesn't count as these should be banned so people use side mirrors, I'm young but have driven 700k miles,  also you've seen my price and I have a TS postcode which is also crap.... Oh and I'm not having ago about your crash but insurance may also view it like that

That's ok, people are allowed opinions and to speculate, I didn't just check my rear view mirror, wing mirrors are an essential check when making any sort of turn, livin in London with the amount of cyclists and pedestrians you have it becomes second nature.

The police, the driver and his insurance company admitted 100% liability but I guess it all comes down to stats and not circumstances.

Sorry I wasn't accusing you of using your re view mirror that was a separate gripe of mine.

With you it was more the mirror before turn thing.

With insurance companys we all know they would be better if the mafia ran them with less extortion, like council tax they think of a price, double it then threaten with points, fines and prison if you don't have it......I hate the insurance comanys (apart from who my e30s with I think £111 for the year is acceptable)

Not too sure if this helps but when i went to insure car the company mention the X5 was most stolen car and wanted security on car.

So it may be asking if premium will go down if extra security fitted to car like a thatcham 1 or a tracker as companies also very worried about x5's being stolen.

Ps Its not only you having dificulties as also I got told I didn't have enough driving experience (31 years officially in cars and a couple more on bikes) to get insured on an M3 e46 model at the tender age of 50
