Why does it always take longer ......

You all know how it works, you start with just a small check, and :'(
Back a few weeks ago I though I would do the pre-holiday checks before setting off for France.
As I checked the oil level, I noticed a small amount of oil around the dipstick area.
Me being me, I thought I would investigate.
After removing the plastics, I thought I would have a look at the air filter.
What do you think?

As you can see, it looked a little different to the new one (new one is at the top for those who weren't sure)! Changed at the last service 5K ago? I think not!
Oil separator check time. Luckily it was the vortex type and was all nice and clean
OK, so what's next? The pipework looked OK so on to the EGR valve.
When I took it off and gave it a quick blast with carb cleaner it looked like this -
A bit of brushing, scraping and agitating and it looked like this - and yes I did check for actuator operation, good job I did as it was somewhat obstructed with a hard build-up prior to cleaning.
After bolting the EGR back on and wiping round the engine bay and oil filler neck etc I was a little happier with how things looked -
I re-fitted the rest of the covers etc, and checked the fluids. The oil check took about 20 seconds, the rest took about 1.5 hours, oh yes and I had to remove the rear engine undertray as my 8 year old son decided to help and dropped my ratchet extension down the back of the engine - bless.
So all in all, a good job done, but SWMBO was not overly impressed with the time-scales. But what's new?
And over 1500 miles, five up and loaded with luggage averaging 80mph - 34.4 mpg, well happy

It certainly is always the way. I always end up taking far longer to complete a job. But my wife's now used to it...lol

That's why she let you have the garage! She'd know where you were regardless of how long you take!
Great job rustynail. Essential preventative maintenance for anyone with a diesel, tbh.

Great indeed.
Sanj can only dream of being able to reach the end of the engine

That's why he has Jeeg round, to hold his legs as he 'planks' across the engine bay

That is very true.... And she is well prepared for the "I'll only be half an hour" to translate into "Good night my love, I'll see you in the morning"
The garage is my sanctuary.....

Great - so I can now officially say that Jeeg is a bit of a plank without being offensive then?

I thought Sanj was 'The Plank'...... or did I misread it accidentally....
@Rusty - you should have realised the air filters are also available in 'Sooty Black' as well as 'Pristine White'. Goes with the Anthracite headlining....

Oh, sorry, my bad. Picture didn't show the free issue livestock, bees, wasps etc, not that they were still alive.
And yes, Sanj was the plank :-X

Very true...lol. Makes a great difference to not have to be working on the car outside at silly hours of the night under the use of my halogen lamps...

Nope as they give off more heat than LEDs and they are actually used for detailing so prefer the light output for swirly vision....

Can the EGR affect performance and if so how?
After removing the engine cover how much of a faff is it to remove the EGR apart from the 4 bolts....like are any liquids lost?

No liquids lost, just fiddly.
Any blockage with carbon deposits will have some adverse affects on performance/efficiency.
