I'm sure there is a simple fix for this but every time I get in the car the heater has reset itself to 16 degrees!  >:(

Any advice?

Can't help with your query Phil but can confirm that on my 04, having changed the setting from 22 to 20, when I've next turned the ignition on it goes back to 22. Usually the next change means it stays at 20.

Just to confirm really that it does happen.

Try pressing using the memory function on the seat and storing under your number, but otherwise it sounds like the key memory function has not been enabled or isn't working correctly.  Each key should store Seat, Mirror and Climate Control settings if the function is enabled - it isn't on by default.  You need to lock and unlock the car with the same key to make sure it has stored.

That's how it worked on mine but I had to get the Dealer to enable the key memory function first.

I can say that when i change my settings pn short trips it goes back to previous setting but if it is a longer journey than it stays with changed setting. I use only one key with mine as my others have dead batteries.maybe my key memory functions turned on , don't know but that is how it works on mine

This is a list of all the Car Memory (stored by the vehicle) and Key Memory (stored in the Key) functions that are available across the various BMW models.  Just look for the E53 Key Memory ones to show what is available.  You'll need a scanner to turn them on though.

The key battery is charged by the car, so if the settings aren't being stored and the key memory function is on it is possible the battery is past it's best.

You can replace the battery, but it does mean surgery on the key!  Here's how
