Number plate

Post by Imy » Mon Nov 05, 2012 12:52 am

Just wanted to know if anyone has had any trouble rearranging prefixes on their number plates? I know it's illegal but not sure how stringent the po are on the matter

On my girlfreinds old 320 cab it had the reg YOI 863 but on the plate it was YO 1863, and for parking on a yellow line it turned into 6 police, 1hr and nearly the car impounded as that reg didn't bring up a bmw cab so they assumed it was stolen until vin etc had been checked and eventually the tax disc was looked at by plod, I knew about it but never thaught about it, she had no idea what was going on and thaught they were going to take her beloved cab! In the end she was let off after been boxed in by plod cars and got a £60 fine for the privilage!  But more than anything it was the way that as soon as it came back as another vehicle she was treated as a theif! Probly won't matter as much if by mis spacing its still obvious what the reg is it will probly just attract a £60 fine when plod are low on brownie points for the month.  As above any of the ebay\showplate sites will make them however you want, but in our case the plate was already made like that and had previously had it 2 years before on an e30 and had no problems

It's not worth drawing unnecessary attention to oneself as any sort of minor infringement like that is just the excuse they need to pull you over and have a good go through everything else.  I got a tug once in my Evo VI which had a bike sized front numberplate blank (it had to due to intercooler positioning).  Jealous and over zealous plod wasted half an hour of my time - even his partner was telling him to let it go as he was OTT.
My advice would be to save up a bit longer and buy the sort of plate that doesn't need messing about with ;-)

Snipez,

I would love to but 1MSY is currently on at £20k!

i got a 51 plate ending MSY so i am going to space out the 1 from the 5 to make it 1MSY.

Plates already ordered just waiting for confirmation from DVLA.

Lets see how lucky i really am!

I have had a £30.00 fine the first time I got pulled then a £100.00 fine the second time and was told next time it will be £1000.00 and they may take my plate away so I leave it as it is now.
All for just moving a 5 along to make B5 TEW into B 5TEW !
Go for it it is worth a chance for £30.00 !
Make sure you get some legal plates made for when you do get pulled though

i dont get why everything has to be so straight in this country.

if you purchase b5 tew then that means all the prefixes are availble to use. why dont the dvla come out with another V registered document that would then allow you to register your car moving the prefixes as you wish.

they say you cant move prefixes because speed cameras etc cannot identify the plate, but then why dont the dvla offer the facility to allow you to register your car with a prefixed moved. they could charge £30 for the priviledge. everyones happy.

I have owned ######## for over 5 years and have not once been pulled over for having it incorrectly spaced.  O:-)

I think a lot of it comes down to how flexible your local constabulary are on this matter. They are obviously a bit more relaxed on it here in Brighton.  8)

I bought PO51 MAG which doesn't mean a great deal unless you space it to read PO5 1MAG on a company truck and the company is called Positive Images 8)

Having been stopped at the shuttle by Le Plod who pointed out it was illegal and they take a very dim view of mucking about with plates I decided it really wasn't worth the agro and put the legal plates back on. The truck also failed its MOT due to spacing.

I really don't see what the fuss is about, surely there's more important things to worry about....if we're not careful they'll be monitoring our driving and charging by the mile next  ;)

Automated systems can read any plate no matter what the spacing anyway, so no idea what the issue is with moving the spacing anyway.

Even the French can read my plate, no idea what "trop vitesse" meant on the overhead signs though with my plate on it  :))

I think it means "speed up!!".  They were obviously worried about the heavy congestion building up behind you, and risk of a pile up.    :))

Funny thing is the DVLA sell cherished plates at auctions themselves, then promptly tell you that re-spacing is an offence!

My upcoming car will have my new plate on it which I got for < 50% of the asking price, with no VAT.  Had watched it for several years and always wanted it, but was never going to pay what they wanted for it.  The recession presented an opportune moment for me to 'make an offer' ;-)
