Our keys range isn't that great.  Anything more than a few meters away and your lucky if it works.

Having just fitted a cheapo maplin remote for the webasto - which I can work from inside the house, now makes the car key seam even more pathetic.

Is there a way to increase the range of the car key, does the range deteriorate with time?

Giving the 'old' key more range is easy!
1. Stand on one leg.
2. Exposé your left nipple.
3. Make sure you have a firm grip on your cheap remote thingy for the Webasto.
4. Jump up and down.
5. Sing tra la la, the fairies are gonna get me.
6. Cover all exposed flesh.
7. Try the 'old' key, it will have the range of a Sidewinder missile.
Alternatively, it may be worth waiting to see if any of the knowledgeable grown ups provide a more sensible answer.

Though step 1 through 7 work for me...........

New batteries?  Even if rechargeable (not sure what type E53s have)?

Sounds like new batteries to me, E53 doesn't have the rechargeable key fob.

Can't help with the range of the key but the E53 key battery does charge from the ignition.

Always glad to be proved wrong as correct information is the only useful information.  After my E53 was px'ed for a 335i hardtop convertible I was told by the dealership that the rechargeable key was a new feature.  When will I learn not to listen to dealers  :'(

I was also told on the same occasion that cars with comfort access can't charge their keys by placing the key into slot? Is this another bum steer or was the dealer correct this time?  ::)

I do the head shot and also for some reason pressing the button harder in my mind should extend the range. )

It is a very safe assumption that you know more than the dealer. My sales guy straight away told me that I knew more about the cars than he did, so he did not even bother trying to tell me stuff.

The only useful thing he did was set up the BT when I collected the car as I did not know that one yet at the time.

Simply touch the fob on your head and it will work for about 18.357 miles!

I have stood next to my car and pressed the button 2 times to open the car yet I've lost count of the times, while playing with kids with keys in my pocket, that I have come out to an unlocked car with wide open windows. Comfort access is not all good.

Actually I have used the wrong term. Forget what it's called now but it's just having a 3 year olds knee in your back pretending he's Spider-Man and managing to keep the unlock button pressed. Happened the first day I had the car and wondered what was going on.

Isn't there an option to set the car to self lock after a certain period of time after unlocking?

It's the wide open windows that are more of an issue - especially living near Manchester. My missus has a celica and that locks automatically.
