Speaker Upgrade

Post by dobbor1 » Thu Dec 20, 2012 10:38 pm

I have been considering upgrading my speakers recently. I have a standard single CD business radio non DSP. Any advice would be most welcome. I think I have 6 speakers existing. Also I believe there is a dab module you can buy which sits behind the main unit. I live in the north west if anyone knows of a good supplier/fitter. Don't want a boot sub just decent like for like replacements. 06 X5

Thanks

I suppose the first question is what are you hoping to achieve with a speaker upgrade? Is it more bass, more mid, just more sound, etc?

Do you want to amp them or still run them off the standard headunit?

Your system will oh be as good as the weakest point so to speak. So if you upgrade the speakers but still have them running off the standard headunit you may not notice a huge difference.

I've upgraded just the headunit for mates before and they've been really surprised at how much better the sound was off the standard speakers.

Raj has got it pretty much spot on.

If you plan on retaining stock head unit then the gains will be minor as the stock speakers output will be matched with the capabilites of the internal amp in the stock headunit.

if you have the single cd setup then it would probably be worth upgrading that with a single din or maybe even a double din head unit which are very cost effective and packed with features including dab.

Changing the head unit would give you significant gains in sound quality immediately as the power output will be higher than that of the stock unit.

Then I would change the speakers as the power output of the speakers will be more effective with an aftermarket head unit.

It's not just the power output but more the signal quality which makes the difference.
