Key from dealer

I think I have read a post similar to this somewhere on the forum but cannot find it ....
I only have one key for my X5 (the diagonal type key)
How much would BMW charge for a second key to be cut and programmed?  I really ought to get another one as knowing my luck I'll loose my one and only key!

Thanks for your input again!

The one for our E46 was £115 three or four years ago.  Same design of key.

I got one for my 8 series from the dealer,it was one of the older type, but you have to take in your V5,Photo ID and they will order you one. They come complete ready cut with the correct micro chip, coded to your car.
All you have to do is go through the initiation process listed in the manual with both keys at the same trime eg 30 seconds apart. It was 90 quid, but that was about 5 years ago. ( delivered to dealers, next day )

£132 I think - get a second one though. Go armed with the logbook and form of ID.

Plus make sure you use both keys! They have a rechargeable battery in them that will die if it's not used in 6 months. Charging is via the ignition barrel when you stick the key in.

i got one done from teh dealer when i got the car. £132 sounds like in teh range i paid..

try and get key memory enabled at the same time. that way the seat memory, steering, mirrors, climate control, radio all are personalised to the key.

I just got the basic key with no buttons - around £40 from dealer and ideal cheap spare. Will open car, alarm will sound but disable once started as key chipped.

This was with dealer in under 24 hours - i needed to show V5 and id. I asked would case be same if I totally lost a key - yes, so worst case is that you are stuck for 24 hours, bonus!
