My Recent 3.0d Purchase

Just dropping in to say hello as it's been a little while due to getting rid of my V8 :(  I chopped the V8 in due to doing between 700 - 1000 miles per WEEK now I'm commuting to London every week from Newcastle.  I stayed with the brand and purchased a 2008 530d M Sport, which I must say is a fantastic motor.... I wont go on about it as the poor car is in the graveyard due to a hydro-locked engine from a deep (6"....!!!!!!) ford (indecently it was written off as a CAT B! and therefore I lost it, stupid insurance inspector!)

SO.... I bought another E53 but this time a 3.0d (as title suggests :D ) Dec 28th 2005 registered (and I thought they wouldn't register a car between xmas and new year..) in sterling grey.  Nav, pano, wide arches, 20"s, heated seats/steering wheel have come in handy these last few days :)

I've made 3 trips Newcastle>London so far and I get 27 to 28 mpg from NCL to LON, and 32 to 33 mpg from LON > NCL which I put down to style of driving. (NCL>LON is 3am drive with cruise on, LON>NCL is Fri afternoon heavy traffic, which dramatically improves fuel economy when you keep taking that foot off the pedal and rolling everywhere :D )

So, I think I'll just straight in and have the thing tuned by Jason, I want economy but don't want to lose any performance, I'll post a section in performance as I will follow up with my results as soon as Jason fits me in and i do a trip up/down the country.

(I know I have no pics...... the car looks black rather than grey due to road salt :( and needs a good clean :) )

Glad to see you're back amongst the fold.

That's not good about the 530d though.....and I think that even with the X6 BMW only allow into something like 20cm of water - the E53 may be the same.  Not much considering how high the car is off the road and the air intakes are by the top of the rad!!

Thanks R,  the E60 manual says up to 30cm of water, which is a foot. The ford was only at 6" deep on the marker board, and when I had to get out and plodge around in it.  However the water was pretty fast moving, still no excuse considering I was going slow and had the missus and 5yo daughter in the car for an hour while recovery came. (I also blocked the ford for 2 hours for other users!) a Renault clio managed it fine just before me................ something not right there Mr BMW.

I bought the X5 so it didn't happen again, at least I'm confident of the location of the air intakes even if BMW are not :)

Congrats on the new motor. Gutting about the 530d though.

I've had to drive my 4.8 through about 1.5' of water trying to get to my neighbours wedding last year. It went through no probs with plenty turning round to not even risk it.

Congrats on purchase mate sounds a nice example. I had a performance/eco mixed map on my X from jason just before christmas. I drove approx 150 each way, got an average 36.8mpg on way home, that was with a little play also  :)
