Would I regret going from a V8 to the diesel variant? Is the a huge difference in power? Would the diesel work out more economical as my current 4.4 is LPG converted prior to my ownership.

From what I've read on this and other forums, those with LPG conversions are able to get the equivalent of 30 mpg out of their petrol/LPG cars (converting like for like price). Depending on your style of driving and also the distances and type of roads you tend to use the chances are you would be seeing around the 28-32 mpg depending what year X5 you are going for. The diesel is all about torque. So power maybe lower but the grunt is strong. You will miss the V8 noise.
If you are looking to get a newer model, then yes go for diesel, but one of similar age spec etc, I would look good and hard at the pros and cons before pxing the V.

I went the other way - 3.0d (owned from new) to 4.8iS. My tuppence worth -
1. The mpg differential in real life is closer than the official figures. I do an uneconomic mix of central London and fast motorway. Diesel was 28 mpg , V8 is around 22. Then of course diesel is a bit more expensive.
2. To be blunt, the diesel is the better all-rounder but I really do like the V8.
3. I think it comes down to mileage. I don't drive to work but need the X5 for a bit of local work and blasts up to Scotland and the Alps.
4. Second-hand the V8 suffers as everyone (apart from a small minority inc me) prefers the diesel.
5. I traded my 2004 diesel with 46k for an immaculate 2004 4.8iS with 28k for virtually no cost.
6. I would do the maths. The more miles you do, the more attractive the diesel but suspect you'll get hammered on the difference in price between the two for trade-in/sale.
Good luck
