I have a 52-plate X5 3.0d, the stereo & OBC broke so am needing to replace them.
If I remove the OBC thats part of the stereo will the indash / speedo area OBC still work using the stalk?
If it does I may buy a after market stereo.
If it doesnt will a stereo & OBC from a E39 fit / work?
:-\

No, sorry you cant retrofit the OEM satnav/stereo/TV into your model. I had the same as you. I have fitted an aftermarket headunit, a Dynavin, or there is the Hooligan ! not spelt like that though, see other posts to check out feedback

You can retro fit..
It just needs a lot of time, money modules and another loom.....
The question is do you want to???
There was a company on EBay that supplied the complete retro fit kit for approx £850
Also there appears to be a few American companies that offer the same but a little more plus import etc...
I considered doing that but ended up with Tom Tom on my Ipod touch and a plug in mount.......
And i dont shy away from a challenge that quick...

How did you remove the bracket that makes it a single din to allow for a 2 din stereo?
So with a aftermarket stereo the OBC near the speedo thats controlled by the stalk will still work? I like to keep an eye on mpg etc!

You need to install the MID in the glovebox to retain that function.

If you changing the stereo as well as the MID the E39 Stereo's came with two different connector versions, Round pins V Flat pins.
The MID have various options, so you'll want one that matches your car. The connectors on the mid should be standard on all ages of E39 / E53
Audio
DSP / Telephone
BC / Clock (Seems some just have clock.. Didn't know that!)
A lot of the E39's didn't even have a the MID, just a bigger radio unit.
I might be parting out an E39 soon, My MID has Audio, BC and Clock, but not the DSP/Telephone. All pixels were in good working order. Just depends if I can get rid of the car as a whole as a restoration job.. Otherwise I'll be happy to part it out.

If you remove the Mid, you will have all the functions you have now on your binnacle, I did.
As your Mid is Broken you are unable to reset the clock and consumption settings now anyway.
I put mine in the glove box only to enable me to reset the clock and MPG . When I had it unplugged it still keeps the binnacle display and stork functions.
As for removing the plastic shelf that separates the cd and mid, it's not a removable bracket. It's moulded into the dash, so a hacksaw blade is required, no turning back once started.
I was worried when I started hacking up my dash, but all turned out ok in the end.
The old kit will not fit in afterwards.............
