Just got some roof bars from BMW as I wanted to get the roof mounted bike rake later also. I read in the instructions that it recommends removing them when not in use, is this really the way or do you guys tend to just leave them on?

On myE53 they did make a bit of noise and of course a bit of difference to consumption, and that taken with the fact they only take a few minutes to remove means I always removed them when not in use. I imagine it will be he same with an E70

Keep the footpack locked by key to reduce theft risk of same & bars.

I have Thule square bars on mine which aren't quiet but are functional. Importantly they have 360 degree rubberised/plastic covering to entirity of the bars.

I have been keeping bars on but only as using rack regularly of late to transport 2 kayaks.

Your dedicated aerodynamic bars will impact on mpg & noise far less than my functional but bulkier items, ( no rude comments please folks ;) ).

Woop Woop I'm posh!! Finally somebody noticed!! lol.

I've got thule bars and box, a must for moving 2 kids, their stuff and a wife who's idea of an overnight bag is a 2 week holiday suitcase to the rest of us!!

Sometimes I leave the bars on, sometimes I take them off, as previously said they dont take any time to whip off if need be but I really dont think that there is a huge mpg reduction if taken off, and no notable noise increase if left on....personal choice, but in my case plain and simple laziness!!!

Dose it not add to the wind noise?

I have not noticed a difference yet but have not been on a long run as yet with the roof bars on, will report back when I do. That being said it does have little spoilers on the front bar.......

The roof bars on mine do make a bit of noise from the wind, not too much but there is a difference. When the bikes are on top and your doing a decent speed they whistle a bit mind.

Did not notice any additional noise (perhaps the music was too loud) but there was a difference in MPG so I shall remove them before the next motorway trip and compare.

I certainly noticed an increase in wind noise, and only fit them when they are to be used.
