remap insurance

I am picking up my 2006 3.0D X5 Sport this afternoon and I have just spoken to LV to do the insurance changeover.  They asked the standard question "has it had any modifications?" and I advised them that I was buying it second-hand but as far as I know it only has factory fitted options.  I was pleased that the quote was only just over £100 more than my 2001 525D.

I then put the hypothetical scenario of an economy remap to them, stressing that it would make the engine more efficient and environmentally friendly but they said any change to the mapping would increase the premium by £90 a year.

Reading about people's experiences on here and other forums, the likely maximum MPG increase I'll see is around 10% so with the cost of the remap plus an extra £90 a year insurance I doubt I will ever recoup the cost.  I've now got to work out whether the smoother power delivery is worth the cost, especially when towing a caravan.

Thoughts please?

I would say yes to the remap, and change your insurance to Chris Knott, or someone similar as they allow things like re maps or exhausts etc without pumping up the premium. I have always declared my mods to the insurance, exhausts, remap, induction kits etc and to be fair, chris knott and the like have never risen due to them.

[/quote]Thanks for that Jamee.  Out of interest I have just rung Chris Knott and they were extremely helpful and confirmed that they are a "mod friendly" insurer.  However, the person I spoke to said that any remap that increased the power of the engine would incur a premium over a standard mapped car.

Hhmmm not sure about that then, I've been with Chris Knott now for about 4 yrs, and my old BMW clubsport was tuned upto 282bhp and Knott had an A4 list of my modifications which included cat back custom exhaust, BryF induction kit, remap and de cat pipes and much more. The premium didnt go up at all.

Sorry I cant be more help, have you tried A Plan as you get discount if you mention your a member of BMW clubs like BMWland etc.

Think I paid £600 for it last year valued at £28k and includes 4 track days. Limited mileage to 5k which is more than adequate

I've changed most things on it !

I was with LV when I had the E60 530i, when I changed to the X5 3.0 d, they said they wouldn't cover me unless I had a working tracker fitted. so I cancelled with them ( £30 fee ) and went to Swiftcover. So I'm surprised they are covering x5's now without trackers. I am not in a high risk area or anything, as I only pay sub £ 500 a year, with protected NCB.

I had to have a tracker when my 535d and X5 were new because they both cost more than £50k. After that they didn't seem to care

Hi,
I've just insured my X5 4.8is with LV as I have another vehicle with them. I mentioned it had a tracker and they told me it made no difference to the price as it isnt something they stipulated. When I asked how much a remap would increase the premium they said they wouldn't insure it. I'm 43 with full no claims!!. So seems like confusing quotes are coming out of LV. Think i'll be shopping around next year.
Regards, Gav.

To be honest I stayed with LV because I've been with them for years (always got new quotes, not renewal) I've got max no claims with them, they know all my details and they were only £10 more than the cheapest other quote for the X5.  If I decide on a remap then I'll shop around when hopefully my advancing years will finally be of some benefit ::)

That makes LV's £90 extra look cheap......

I think what this proves what we already know, you have to shop around to find the company that gives the best deal for YOU...not your mate or other forum members.

I'm 57 and have been with LV for years.  Annoyingly their renewal quotes are usually quite a bit more expensive than a new quote but you simply ask for a new quote a they give you the deal....well me anyway  ;)

I'm 31 and haven't paid over £600 for insurance for years now!  :)) Go on comparethemarket.com & gocompare.com. I always get quotes from both and then go with the cheapest!  8)
