Hi Colin.....my 04 plate is the same.....apparently you can get it coded so that aux heating is an onscreen option and useable. Although unless you get a remote, you can only use it via the on screen timer....which is fine if you leave the house at the same time every morning.
I plan on getting mine coded very soon, as i think it will be great on the really cold mornings, but being able to get into a warm car.
Dont quote me on what ive just said.....but this is what ive gathered from other posts about it.
Hope it helps you
Cheers

you can do it with a BMW 1.4 Scanner - I did it msyelf and Im not that good with these things. I got mien on enay a couple of years ago for about 40 quid. As the reply said you need to knwo when you're leavign the house however unless it is an unschedueld trip you are going to have a rough idea of when you are leaving and it does have the facility to bring the timer on a two different times so you can use one to defrost first thing and the other set to come on prior to your rough time of scanner.
I've never fitted the remote - really didn't see the need for it - just plan ahead !

When you got your scanner did you have to solder 2 pins so that the scanner can write?
Ive read elsewhere...that most people who bought one of these had to do this to get it to write the coding....if not it reads only.
Where did you get yours from, and did you have to mod it at all?
Cheers

Same here Colin......ive read that some come with the 2 pins already soldered. But most it seems are DIY.
Im like you....never used a soldering iron in my life.....I would end up blowing the ECU on the car lol.
If i knew someone that has bought one that is all ready to go....id have had one by now.

I got it from the Buy/Sell forum here - didn't need to do anything with it, hadn't actually heard that before

Bought mine off EBay, didn't need to solder mine, works a treat. Bit of a pain to load drivers though, and my disc was blank !
Downloaded the drivers from the net, and loaded onto an old PC running XP

...assumes your car actually has the aux heater installed of course. Not all have: more common on E53 diesels than E53 petrol engines. Not claiming to be an expert as my previous X5 didn't have this option (it was a 3.0i) but I understand there are also some differences in that some warm the engine block and some go further and warm the passenger cabin as well.
Pretty easy to spot (if fitted) underneath the bonnet though. Nice option to have!

The soldering 2 of the pins inside the scanner was mentioned somewhere on another site. Apparently, it could read faults etc but could not actually code things to work unless these pins were soldered. Maybe they come already done now. I've ordered one of eBay, so will see when it arrives from china.

Hi , yes there is an aux heater and it does fire up when you start up the X on a frosty morn, it must help warm engine and heater quicker , so only thing missing is the timer function , good luck with scanner MSPORTBMW lets know how you get on with it . Colin..

If it works as it should - don't mess with the coding - sometimes it is successful, others like me found it unsuccessful - I managed the coding, but it the car reported an error because it was looking for the changeover valve.
Basically, if it came out of the factory programmed with telestart, you would have a changeover valve, which controls if the Cab Only or Engine & Cab water circuit is heated.
If you activated it by remote (telestart), it would heat up the Cab only - so that it would heat up and defrost the cab faster.
When your engine is running, it heats up the whole system to bring the vehicle to optimum operating temperature faster. It also tops up the heat again if you ask for a temperature on your climate control that is above the temperature available from the water system.
If you wire up a £30 maplin remote - you can activate the heater, but it will heat the entire coolant system, which is still enough to defrost the car and take the chill off.
Read this

and to install remote (read post 22 - for best solution)

The Remote
http://www.maplin.co.uk/2-channel-rf-re ... ule-265472
My only flaw is I have no indication the remote worked, short of opening the window and checking I can hear the webasto fuel pump clicking away. Jaynana had an LED in his grill that lit up when the webasto was on - not sure of the best waty to do that with the module in the boot - out of harms way.

Hey colin......Well i got my scanner 1.4 from fleabay for £29 i think !!!
I played around with it yesterday and have now got Aux Heating/vent on my OBD, where previously it only said aux vent
I did try it out this morning by setting the on screen timer, but it didnt come on !!!
It did however come on when i selected "Direct"
Im wondering if it will only come on via the timer if the outside temp is below a certain degrees??
I dont have the remote thingy and dont intend to get one as i normally leave the house at the same time everyday, so i wouldnt have too much need for it. But i wonder if anyone could enlighten me about the outside temp query?
Anyway, i also set my car to beep when i lock it, and gonna play with some more stuff today.
IMO, its £29 well spent.
Cheers
