hiya had our x5 a week today,dropped a friend off went to pull off the car revved but didnt go anywere,turned it off then back on and it pulled away. Then pulling into the drive waited for the gates to open it did the same.did the same on reverse also. Dash board said transmission fail safe mode.....HELP

best have deep pockets. did it come dealer or private

Hi and welcome to the forum.
The gearboxes in the early X5s can be troublesome, as can the later ones for that matter.The dreaded trans fail safe message can be a sign of needing a new/ refurb gearbox. The car may have been traded in to save the previous owner 2k in repairs.
I would take it back to the dealer and try and get your money back or get him to do the repairs.
These cars are getting on for 13 years old, and come with wallet busting repair bills.
You don't expect. 2k repair bill on 5k car
