Electric Steering Column
Electric Steering Column
My X5 is fitted with one of these (unsure if it's standard or not). Anyway when I initially got the car, starting the car it would electronically move toward me and equally when I retracted the key it would move an inch or so back - I guess to allow more comfortable access to the seat.
Dealer reprogrammed the car some weeks back following on from my post around the servicing, and it no longer seems to do it? Is there an option to enable/disable this function?

Re: Electric Steering Column
Has the seat memory been set? The steering wheel may well just be in the correct "stored" position abd therefore has no need to move.
This is the case for me in mine, however when my other half uses the X5 with her programmed key, it moves down and toward her when started and up and away when she turns it off. Its because she is smaller than me. Quite a lot actually...

Agree, it could be this

Re: Electric Steering Column
I may not of explained this very well. If the seating/mirrors/steering wheel setup for me it used to automatically retract when I stopped the vehicle and removed the key as if to let me out of the car. Then when I re-started the car using the same key it would move toward me to resume the preset position - does that make sense?
Re: Electric Steering Column
you can program it to do that in the idrive menu

Re: Electric Steering Column
That's what I thought was probably the case, any idea where? or is it some kind of hidden menu only the tech's are supposed to access?
Re: Electric Steering Column

Re: Electric Steering Column
I couldn't find any customisable functionality for the steering column, in the end I tried raising it to it's highest setting then down to it's lowest setting and the function has now resumed. ???
Re: Electric Steering Column
If the steering wheel is set as close the dash as it can go then it will have nowhere to retract to...hence it won't retract.
I don't think there's any way to stop the steering wheel retracting which annoys me slightly as I find harder to get in and out of the car when it's retracted. A quick nudge of the column adjustment lever stops it retracting, so I do this every time I pull the key out of the slot.

Re: Electric Steering Column
I went through the i-drive menus last night and couldn't see it. Ours does retract and I must have been confusing it with an E60 we had where you could programme it to retract via idrive
