Noticed today an erratic tapping noise from the upper part of the engine @600rpm tickover - disappears from 1,000 rpm upwards - 97,000 on the clock - any ideas anyone? (the car is due an oil change BTW)

Possibly a hydraulic tappet/ cam follower, used to be a common problem on early OHC engines. Hope its a simple cheap fix like this

Thanks for the replies
From listening to Youtube BMW engine noise clips, 'my noise' sounds most like a worn serpentine belt tensioner - anyone had this on a 3.0D ?

Sorted ! - idler pulley and tensioner pulley were both rattling slack - replaced and the noise has gone

~£100 quid for the bits (tensioner pulley, idler pulley and new belt) - had to remove the air intake and rad fan to get enough room! (water pump, alternator and aircon compressor bearings were silent on spin so I've left them alone)
