Well.... whilst on the Webasto journey the cold weathe revealed all was not well with the engine and cabin heating. The gauge NEVER got beyond the first tick after blue (1/3rd basically). If the car was forced to by spirited driving it could get just above that mark....but only just.

Back in April I had the thermostat replaced and was convinced that this had failed somehow. In desperation because I was cold, the engine ran less than optimal I took the car back to the indie. An error code check revealed "Auxillary water pump fail".....ehh :blink:

This was replaced (not a cheap part) and everything is toasty....wonderfull however illogical

One day I will maintain something instead of fixing dead bits :'(

New bit count
New rear wishbone arms rear plus bolts and bushes
Steering Arms (both bits) both sides
Auxillary water pump
Climate module
Thermostat
Air filter
Oil and filter,,,,a few times
oil seperator

I lived with that fault for 2 years. Took me £15 and 30 minutes to finally fix it. Why the heck didn't I do it sooner?

Ive got a sensor to replace now cos the wife got in the car after a kids party turned the pdc off as the beeping was annoying her and reversed into a post! >:(scratching the bumper and popping out a sensor that fell off! You couldn't make it up!

Ahem - why do you think I finally fixed my sensor? Cost me another £150 in insurance premiums cos the other guy got a dodgy quote for £700+VAT to replace an Astra front grille. No way I was paying that out of my pocket so the silly bugger went through insurance.

The wife has an X5 so it's double the pain
4 new tyres on hers
door handle carrier
new steering wheel cover too

her mid is pixelated quite bad
has a bit of a first gear jump when warm

Must get a scanner really. Facelift fronts are a PITA and I replaced one....and broke one wing mount a bit

If I take the bumper off again ut just mgh be all 4 I swap,,,,but then again I have an unused wing mount for the bumper gathering dust> Will have to wait for the summer

2 new rear tyres coming on Sat courtesy of Event Tyres....bank balance might take a rest after that


having said that I get 2 mpg more now it's warming properly.....

still baffled how a pump would make it warm properly...but it does...............toasty

Hi all , my temp gauge only goes to the tick above the blue  even after long drive , so is my heat system faulty ?  where should needle be , normal, on a  (05 e53 diesel ) Thanks ...

Temp gauge should be smack upright in the middle.  If it's below then you may have a dying thermostat which may keep the engine in 'cold' operating mode for longer and burn more fuel.

Thanks R , I also notice after a long drive today (120 mls ) the aux heater was running ?( it was only 4 deg outside ) i could here it at traffic lights and when i got home , Thanks ,Colin ...

aux heater should run below 5deg C until engine is up to normal temp.
sounds like you defo have a stuck thermostat then if its having to run all the time.
shove a bit of cardboard accross half the radiator to block the cold air flow - thats what i used to do with my old cortina!!!!    worked tho

mines a 54 plate diesel and as the OP of this thread I can tell you it should be bolt upright. In this weather with the fixes I had it takes 4 miles ( or less) ro get vertical whereas before this week after 40 miles in never got above the first tick.....and the cabin temp was rubbish

Thermostat is the most logical (and cheapest part) to look at. Strangely (and I have no reason to doubt the indy) the thermostat wasn't the problem with mine but a £100 auxillary pump.

The pump apparently came up on diagnostics being electrical and all that but mine may have been a one off
