Reverse camera help

Hi everyone!

I bought a reverse camera from a guy on another forum and I'm having a little problem with it, I hope you guys can point me in the right direction...

It is a license plate cam with night vision, and came with an extra connector from media in motion that plugs into the white connector on the TV module then the old plug connects to the new one (I hope that made sense). It also had an extra white white that clips into the blue TV module plug in pin space 17 (Automatic switching).

I have read other threads on here that talk about a relay, but mine never came with one, I found a picture of the kind of setup I have:

The only difference is that mine does not have number 1 or number 2.

Any help I can get is greatly appreciated.

Steve

Bite the bullet and seek out an auto electrician or a local Indy.  Not worth the hassle and time wasted; plus they'll do any cutting and shutting required to trim etc.

If you are competent it is not difficult. If not take Snipez advice it will work out cheaper

If you want to do it yourself you will need a 4 pole relay some spade connectors and wire (Hafords) Pin 85 on the relay connect to the reverse light + Pin 86 and 30 are linked and connect to earth Pin 87 is the link wire to pin 17 on the blue video plug on your TV module. This set up triggers the monitor when reverse is selected.

Now you can connect the camera AV output, there are 2 ways of doing this (1) Simple buy an AV input lead for your X5 it plugs into the white connector on the TV module and will give AV inputs Play station DVB TV etc and a camera input.
Power for the camera is taken from the reverse light + and a connection to earth (use the same as you did for the relay) mount the relay out of the way tidy up the cabling turn on the ignition select reverse and test. Job done.

Lol I've now tried everything and nothing gets rid of the flicker, I have tried this one:

And this one:

Also it seems that when I attach the wire from pin 17 on the blue plug the screen just goes black.

I can't let this beat me lol

I would use the first diagram, is there a fault with the camera? We had a reverse camera on the horse trailer that flickered changed the camera for a cheap one off Ebay problem fixed.

Is the camera NTSC or PAL specific? Also check the settings on the car are set to whatever camera type you have?

Do you get any reverse camera image, does it come through when you engage reverse?

Hi guys,

Thanks for your prompt responses!

I'm not 100% sure if the camera is NTSC or PAL, I have the car set to PAL so I will try NTSC and see if that works.

I do get an image, it just tends to flicker so I cannot really see anything behind me (AV), this is without the pin 17 wire connected as when I connect it the screen just goes black with "mute" at the bottom. Without the wire connected.

What the hell am I doing wrong lol

I would go back and check the wiring carefully. You should definately need pin 17 connected to trigger the monitor.
What set up are you using? It should be your first diagram whether you use an AV input lead or hard wire the camera it should work. Pin 17 was vacant wasn't it? It should be a vacant position and you insert the wire and pin connector into.
I am going to fit mine later today so will check it out and let you know

OK Reverse Camera fitted I used the first diagram Which I believe is Sanj's. The only deviation was I used an AV input cable so no need to splice the AV feed into the white plug.

All worked first time and simpler than I thought. Sim0x I can only think either you have a bad connection somewhere or its camera settings.
Hope you get it sorted.
