My 2004 x5 sat nav has developed a problem. It was working fine but it now says it can't read the disc and sometimes no disc found! I have tried cleaning the disc and disconnecting the battery but its still the same. Does the disc need updating or is it a problem with the drive itself?

OEM disc? If not, then that might be a source of the issue.
Could also be dust on the laser pickup head.

I find the non oem disc are very fussy on what type of media you are using, try it on another brand.

Non oem discs can cause all manner of problems, try oem if you have not already done so. Otherwise there may be a problem with the laser - this can be repaired, there are a few people who offer online services - post it to them and they repair and send back. Or you can attempt the laser replacement yourself if handy with soldering iron. Otherwise source a good used unit, get a mk4, and just replace the unit in the boot.
