Damned auto fold mirrors

I'm a very infrequent visitor these days so i hope its OK to seek some help?

My car is equipped with the all fancy power fold, self dipping door mirrors and after the worm gears fix on the driver side last year all has been good.

Now however the passenger side is being a royal pita. I assumed it was the same issue so off to 'Demka World at eBay for another set of gears. It turns out the gears were fine and by process of elimination i finally woke up and realised what the problem is.

If manually folded in the motor will wind it out, but with the help of a friend ears he tells me the motor is not running when they should fold in. As we all know unless they work in unison the non faulty side buggers about too. So my conclusion is the micro-switch and i recall there is a fix for that but i can't find any posts via a search?

I'd really appreciate any help or pointers please, as £500 for a new mirror carcass is not on my wish list.

I may have solved my own query after all. Some internet digging lead me to the switch in the link which needs the lever tweaking by way of some careful bending but its got to be worth a shot over a new mirror assembly!!

The distributor knows all about BMW mirror issues and said he's sold dozens of these pesky little switches to owners.

Yes that's the one.............I didn't realise these could be bought individually. Great find.

Thanks for sharing this rare find...........I may even buy a couple to keep as spares in event one gets damaged/bent beyond repair.

I fixed mine by reshaping the metal spring part of the switch.

Word of advice do some research on removing the covers and re-fitting them.....I have seen more than one tutorial and the clips can be fragile. Consider using multiple trim tools, cards or thin wide tipped levers.

Good Luck and keep us posted

Oh and don't be a stranger............I have yet to walk into a pub with a mixed crowd inside and get on with everybody, however,  I still enjoy a visit to my local once in a while  ;)

Hi SB,

Hope you don't mind but I added your switch link to the How To I did a while back - here. Great find. :ok:

No problem at all.

BUT, i ain't done yet it seems  >:(

Only today had time to access the mirror again and discovered the new switch has three wires whereas the original has two. This may not be a problem but i've asked the supplier to confirm before i cut the old switch off.

What baffles me though is, if manually folded in, both mirrors will power fold out. When hitting the button to fold them in again, the motor on the passenger side isn't running at all so seemingly isn't getting power so the door switch is maybe 'iffy'?

If the motor will wind it out i can't understand why it won't wind in, despite that i can't believe the motor will function in one mode but not another unless its not getting power for some reason.

If anyone has any thoughts, please share them as a motor is circa £200 from BMW and i've seemingly already wasted £70 on the worm gears and the micro-switches, neither of which seem to be at fault.

“Your original switch V4NC08 with the 2 wires will be colour coded, either
(GREY -  NORMALLY CLOSED)
(BLACK – COMMON)
(BLUE – NORMALLY OPEN)
The switch we have supplied V4NSY1-UL will be coded
(YELLOW -  NORMALLY CLOSED)
(RED – COMMON)
(BLUE – NORMALLY OPEN)
Please use the 2 wires that match your colour coding, and discard the 3rd wire”
