e70 4.0d MPG

Post by hertfordshire1 » Wed Jul 09, 2014 1:19 pm

Calling all e70 4.0d LCI owners.

My 2010 LCI car is pretty naff on juice.

Whenever I use it at the weekend (the other half runs around in it during the week) the MPG is always showing 24.

I can live with that (just about) as town driving is never going to be that fuel efficient.

However on sat morning, I had about a 30 mile motorway run to do.

So I joined the motorway, got up to about 85MPH and reset the trip computer.  I then drove at a steady(ish) 85 for the entire 30 miles.

What MPG would you expect to see?

The trip computer showed:
25.9 consumption
85.7 speed

So at a steady run, its not even getting over 26 MPG!!

Is this my car, or are other owners seeing similar numbers???

My AMG Merc used to return 23 MPG on a similar run and that had a 5.5 V8 stuffed between the front wheels!!

Any thoughts appreciated.

Cheers,

Steve

My 35d does 28 on average. Usually, each journey is 20 miles, of which 80% is dual carriageways and rest backstreets. very heavy car with huge wheels ! >:D

Find our 40D really sensitive to throttle inputs....

Drive it normally on motorway (75-85mph) and we see 29.5 MPG

Drive it with really gentle throttle (like there is an egg under the throttle pedal!) at the same speeds and we can see upto 34-35MPG!

It really does make that much difference so worth being a little gentler for 20% better MPG!

I have a 3.0sd. It's averaged about 25mpg since we've had the car. We do about 8k miles per annum in it. 1/3 town driving and the other 2/3 motorway / A-roads.

It's shocking how BMW can say X5s get 40mpg on the motorway!. It seems to be a very common question on the forums about poor mpg figures that seems to get the same answer. i.e nobody ever averages more than 30mpg !!

Ive tried driving the both hard and really economically, and it makes little difference, 20% max.

Still love the car though, but a bit pi**ed at BMW for leading me to believe it was much more economical that it really is !  >:(

I'm lucky if mine (40d) goes above 21 mpg around town, now I either drive like a mad arse or it's 'stuck'  :)

We have a late 2010 40d and as we live in Derbyshire most of our driving is down narrow winding country lanes, our average mph is 37.4 and out fuel consumption is 26.6mpg.

If you are looking for economy I guess an X5 would not be your first choice  ::)

[/quote]I read an article once stating that car manufacturers can use a base model for mpg testing, ie with no options like heavy leather or 20" wheels.

You drive like a pussy though !!!

How is your beetle!?

To the OP at 85mph you are tryin to push a massive brick through the air. I found at 70 odd that would make a massive difference. Like indicated above my Rs4 with a big V8 would do as well as my X5, if not better, at those speeds.

I'm getting an average 10.9 L/100 since I picked the car up. That's (235.2/10.9) 21.5mpg. That includes cruising at 120mph or higher on the autobahn. I do not in general drive with an eye towards economy, except from time to time.  We have lesser cars in the driveway in case I'm feeling miserly (Polo 3cyl, Berlingo 4cyl).

But this thread tickled me to try a bit. As ChrisABP mentioned, there does seem to be a considerable difference between gentle acceleration and spirited. The very heavy rain today probably scotched any mpg gain I got by accelerating gently.

Cheers all for your thoughts.

I'll try the sensitive throttle trick and I'll also try it again with the cruise set and no throttle inputs from myself.

Failing that BMW can have a look.

Cheers

Mine has '5DF ACTIVE CRUISE CTRL+STOP&GO FUNCT' which seems quite heavy-footed. When it determines that it's time to put the pedal to the metal, it does just about that.  So as for using the cruise to save on fuel, I have a shadow of a doubt.  Keep us posted.

I have never yet found a cruise control that is more economical than using your own foot.  Just look at how much they 'overshoot' to climb a hill.  It also as above is all too willing to drop a couple of cogs when re-engaged, usually with no need.  If mine does it I use the flappy paddles to put it back into 8th.

I usually notice that disconnecting mine will often result in the live fuel meter moving to a more economical figure.

Just lifting off a small amount improves economy without affecting speed.
