2010 E70 X5 3.0d - Oil Sump Plug Leak

I’ve just had a look at the sump replacement procedure and WOW! There’s a ton of stuff to remove, a hardware store level of fixings and even a straight edge required!! Whatever happened to ‘simple’? I mean half-a-dozen screws and a gasket. 15 minutes and done.

I also use a suction system now.

Definitely looked dodgy so I have deleted the post.

N57 Which Oil? Engine known for bearing failur

It’s no different with the latest models either. OK it’s not engines on the i4, but BMW has (along with other manufacturers) had to issue a number of recalls. The last one for the i4 was a sub-contractor made coolant changeover valve - similar to a three-way central heating valve - which leaks below...

N57 Which Oil? Engine known for bearing failure

Mine still uses 0w30 Castrol FST Synthetic as it has since new. I don’t push the engine hard at all so no idea why they should suffer bottom end issues. N-series are long gone as they were replaced by the B-series. The 4-cyl unit was known for timing chain issues. I also allow the engine to warm bef...

I had a very bad experience with a plumber. He was happy to turn out next door (who recommended him) as their jobs were more lucrative money wise. Changing two kitchen mixer taps? Not interested! Ended up doing them myself.

French litter!

What you could do in this case is use a suction oil remover. They may get sniffed at, because of alleged debris left behind, but they work.

Very handy….but you probably wished you’d known that before cursing up a storm!

That error code covers a number of issues. Did you inadvertently move any wiring, or even not plug something in (it wouldn’t be the first time one of us has done that)? Check from the throttle valve back into the ECU for continuity.

Air leak? Any split hoses?

What error codes are showing?

It’s good to see a few well looked after examples still around, though they are definitely getting rarer. I see one of two a month may be.

Battery Suggestion?

You need to check whether lithium is appropriate as the charging characteristics are different and the E53 doesn’t have a battery management system such as was fitted to the E70 and later models. The OEM battery is (or should be) an AGM type. I’ve used both Exide and Yuasa on my BMWs with good resul...

Brake pads warning popped on tonite.

The sensor is a one time use, so once triggered then that’s that. Might be a poor connection in the plugs that are on the wheel well wall. If there’s a bit of crud in there you might get a random error.

2010 E70 X5 3.0d - Parking Brake Fault

As you say, the gears look OK. The second reduction gear is dirty, but that’s probably from the retaining spring. The teeth all look pretty good. Curious if there’s any backlash or wear that would allow any of the three gears to jump rather than engage? Parking brake cables OK? It’s only the motor l...
