E53 rear half shaft removal
At least you know where it is now and don’t need to go all ‘Tarzan’ with the half-shafts.

E53 rear half shaft removal
Is there any slack when you try to counter rotate the two halves of the prop shaft relative to each other? That would point to the spider joint going (I think). Could be the same at each end if you can lock the prop. Might the diff failure have over loaded something ‘upstream’ is where my mind is goi ...

Airbag (Suspension)
MOD EDIT - added suspension to stop confusion with safety restraint system. Well it threw me off at least
All I can think of is either the height sensor was out of limit, or may be there’s a different sensor on the pump either of which prevents the pump from starting until ‘in limit’?

BMW will always have ‘special’ tools so as to justify their ‘special’ pricing. No one outside a dealer or specialist Indy is likely to have them so as suggested, brass and a suitable hammer, maybe even a slide hammer might do the job for less faff and cost.

E53 rear half shaft removal
Just been looking myself under what I thought were the right keywords, but nothing yet. Press definitely needed to get the old ones out and new in to the drive flanges/bearing carrier.

No requirement to do so in the book, but it does say that you need to have the suspension under ‘load’. This is achieved by raising the rear wheel carrier by 20mm. It does say you need a hydraulic press the shaft out of the drive flange. I think it’s been done a few times on here so there ought to be ...

Almost stuck in snow this morn
Snow? What snow? Not had any here in the East. Only just below freezing here.
You do have ‘Snow Mode’ on the traction control. Short press of the DSC button should bring it up. Long press turns DSC off completely but you have to be really really sure before you do that….

What diff oil
Which engine version? One version (40d with Dynamic Performance Control option) has a three chamber rear diff with two separate and different fluids. If you do have that (or any DPC equipped version) then the outer chambers use SAF Carbon Mod, with the centre chamber using SAF XO Burma’s Castrol. ...

MODERATOR - Are you actually going to add anything about BMWs and owning such, or is this just going to be about F1? So far every post has been about F1 and adds little to this Forum. I don’t want to stifle special interests, but …

Seat bolster refurb..
Not seen anyone on here do it. According to Realoem’s last update 5 years ago, there are replacement parts available (just the foam). You’ll probably need to remove the seat and take it apart to release the cushions, heater panels and related wiring. The leather cover should come off relatively eas ...

As far as I know, ‘sold as seen’ is no longer legal in the UK if the Seller is a motor trader, and this smacks of being a motor trader type ad.

I’d go for rear drive / prop shaft bearing as well. You need to get underneath and just check the play in the UJ and the prop shaft centre support bearing. From your description of the sound, heat shielding rattle is also possible - and a lot cheaper to sort - but a mission to the underneath will be ...
