Weird nav screen?

Post by Sim0x » Sat Jun 28, 2014 9:27 am

Hi guys,

Been having a bit of a strange problem withy the nav unit of late, it tends to lock up although the radio or cd (whichever is being used) still works, you just cannot do anything on the screen. Then..... The next time I start the car, the complete setup has changed;

From this;

(Ignore the dust lol)

To this;

And the navigation menu disappears.

Any ideas?

my screen has been playing up like this for years!  >:(
especially on a longer journey, the screen just goes blank then after a couple of seconds seems to reboot with this very basic looking font, then it goes back to normal. it doesnt affect the radio or nav or anything else, it just randomly reboots the screen every now and then. no idea why.  :blink:

Mine did that for a long time, sometimes randomly the Nav option would disappear as well and a completely new menu would appear, like for the phone for instance.  Eventually, the nav failed about 6 weeks ago and was replaced by BMW under warranty, the problem hasn't emerged since then but its early days yet. Switching off for a while always seemed to reset it until the nav died completely.

It will be your SatNav that's causing thus issue. When it works, just unplug it and you'll get that screen.

See if a clean of the connectors helps.

When the nav computer throws a wobbler the system reverts back to the tv module running the show,check all connectors or maybe ur nav computer is on its way out.

In my case it was definitely the nav on its way out - had exactly the same issues. Took a few months more for the nav to eventually turn up its toes and die completely.

You can buy the MkIV nav units fairly cheaply on ebay sometimes if you want to stay OEM head unit etc.

Sanj, Raj and others have pulled out all the OEM stuff and done new installations -have a search on here. You will lose the message facility on the dash though, as a nonOEM system won't give that connectivity. Plus its not as straightforward asa plug and play Halfords jobbie in a standard single din space in many cars. Lots of info on here though.

I have an OEM setup - no chinese unit in mine. Am getting bored with the old system now and I'm looking at thiswith Jeegnesh who first put me on to it.
