Smooth running controller??? Help

Hi I just scanned my X5 with BMW scanner to find the fault below. I take it the first is a faulty glow plug (Through has always started with no problem at all)

Whats the second fault? Could this be an injector? The car sometimes vibrates when stationery but is fine when driving. Can I check the injectors with scanner.

This is the best explanation Google throws up.

The engine smoothness control facility balances out the speed fluctuations of the individual cylinders caused by different injection quantities and degrees of cylinder efficiency. This is achieved by rapid application of controlled corrected injection quantities for each cylinder.

It seems to be a function of the ECU which detects mis-firing cylinders. I guess a glow plug could be the root cause of this and/or dirty injectors, fuel or fuel filter etc.

I have a similar problem ! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I recently replaced all 6 glow plugs in my 2006 3.0d after getting an "open circuit" fault code.

With the plugs replaced...the original faults are gone, but now I am getting:

4B10 DDE Smooth running controller

Correction Quantity too high

Fault Currently Not Present

Fault would not cause a warning lamp to light up

Engine Speed: 799,890 RPM.

Runs/idles fine with the exception of a puff of black/grey smoke if I floor it.

Anyone any ideas?

Firstly welcome,

That puff of smoke is normal for the diesel, it is quite excessive but normal.

I can't help but feel it is a little more than normal. My EGR valve was well gunked up so I've cleaned it as best I can and plan to replace it next week. I'm also going to replace the MAF.

My 2006 X5 is approaching 90,000 miles so I feel happier taking care of this stuff now.

Would a software update do anything to help with the puff of smoke? I believe it helps smooth out the transmission somewhat.

I think a good service and replacement of filters should help - the transmission can be 'soft' reset (just have a quick search for the way to do it).

5hep has a remapped E53 diesela nd we've followed him when he boots his, constantly smoking away. That car is mint though (no expense spared).

I've just changed the air, oil, fuel and yes, tried the soft reset.

Any idea what the Smooth Running Controller error is I'm seeing?

I have a ("ahem") GT1 so the code is accurate.

Would this suggest a dodgy injector?

I have no performance issues that I have noticed.

The smooth running controller is usually a good indication that one or more of the injectors is on their way out. You mentioned that the running is not smooth at idle which is another sign. I don't know if the software your using let's you check the injector values but that's the first place to start.

Does anyne know how to check injectors with BMW scanner 1.4.0 perhaps live data tho havent a clue how to do it

Hi.

I ran a smooth running controller test and it threw up the following:

Cylinder 1 -0,3
Cylinder 5 -1,4
Cylinder 3 -0,7
Cylinder 6 -1
Cylinder 2 -1,8
Cylinder 4 5.2

So the value in cylinder 4 seems way off !

Any suggestions of where to go next? Would such an extreme value suggest something other than just replacing the injector?

Wiring issue?

I ran a smooth running controller test using a GT1 diagnostic - it gives you the values for each cylinder.

Just another thought....I had no smooth running fault before I had the glow plugs changed. It only occurred after.

I had all 6 changed but was getting an error on cylinders 1, 2 and 6

No error on cylinder 4 !

Could the indy have done something wrong when putting in the new plugs ?

I also have an exhaust gas recirculation error which I managed to clear by cleaning out the EGR valve. Its come back again since so I am going to replace the valve.

Would I be right in thinking that the EGR valve is NOT causing the cylinder 4 fault ? - I mention this as the DIS test plan suggests :Irregular engine operation may also be attributed to a defect in the exhaust gas recirculation.

The test plan states:

Impermissible deviation may be caused by the following:

-fuel injector defective

-poor compression

Is it possible the indy hasn't re-seated the injector in cylinder 4 properly?

How difficult would it be to swap injector 4 with one of the others? See if the high value follows the suspect injector.
