Rear Diff

Hi,

Just joined the forum and hoping I can get some help/advice. I have a 2005 3.0D Sport Auto, my rear diff is completely knackered & needs replaced. I was hoping to pick up a second hand one as don't fancy paying the new cost from BMW. I was wondering if someone could help me with what second hand diffs would be compatible with my X5? The part numbers on my current diff are 910506040484001 or 7524892eae045391. The stamped number is 1428631h.

Anyone any ideas what (if any) diffs would be compatible? and where would be best to find a good second hand one?

Hi and welcome

you could try FAB Direct on the Internet. A couple of members have bought new ones from BMW, they seem to be discounting them these days, it's worth doing a search on the forum for diff problems, there will be a few posts on how people have sourced new parts

Ratio 1:3.91

You may find one online (ebay) under risk, or use an online parts search facility.

Thanks for the advice. I tried Fab direct but they never had one.

Got a price from BMW...£1800, so think I will give it a few more days to see if I can find one.

Anyone any other ideas where I could try?

When i was looking to convert mine to manual i put in a search on "Breakeryard".
Come back with a few prospective ones, Cheaper than Dealer, but still not at my price...

Had another thought...what if i was to get a front & rear diff as a pair, second hand,that were a different ratio to what is currently on my X5, does anyone know if this can be done without causing any problems/damage?

The auto gearbox has an output shaft speed sensor, and the wheels have speed sensors, there may be conflicting inputs if these are fed into the same system

It will affect your overall speed per revs and could affect acceleration.

I seem to remember that the gearbox internal speed sensors only deal with gearbox related bits and should not up other warning as above. However not tried it so can't guarantee that bit..

I did a spread sheet for mine which allowed me to put in different ratios to see what the effect was with differrent diff ratios.
Was surprised that using the 5sp manual in place of the auto box, but leaving front & rear diff meant that at steady 60mph the engine would be running 500rpm higher.
In effect 5th in the manual was same as 4th on the auto..

Re rear Diff,
Are the bearings in these units replaceable by a GOOD DIY mechanic ?

Any one done this, or are there specialist tools needed ?

I Assume that a hydraulic press is needed to squeeze the bearings on, but are there silly tolerances that need setting etc ?
