Everything is fixed ......... Well almost!!

Post by Smeeagain » Sat Feb 14, 2015 10:48 pm

So after various posts over the last few weeks car went into garage yesterday.....

Steering wheel vibration under braking - front pads and discs replaced, all sorted
Rear screen wash not working - cleaned out with low pressure airline, sorted
Battery - bosch silver s5 830a 100 019 replaced under manufacturers warranty
Starter replaced, ring gear visually inspected and confirmed to be ok and not problematic as previously thought

But picked up car from garage and drove home. Went back out later and started it and git a hell of a knocking sound from underneath - sounded like starter was kicking around on cranking. Opted not to go out and drove the car to garage first thing this morning. Turned out their parts supplier supplied wrong starter and they didn't notice. It wasn't mounted correctly and as a result cranking it has cracked the nose cone. It appears that in addition to the two mounting bolts there are two dowels on the gearbox that locate into two recesses on the starter. The problem starter only had one recess but of course there is still the second pin to locate and it was striking the starter and pushing it out of position
The nearest starter in stock was in London (about 75 miles away) so had to leave the car there to be done on Monday .........

You'd have thought that as a minimum a visual comparison would be carried out before a part fitted just to make sure one looks like the other... not just trusting that the part is the same because the packaging or label says so.

Plus if it was sitting proud on a dowel you would think it would be noticeable when they were fitting it ??

yes you would think so .........

However, I have used this garage for years on several cars with no problems at all.

We all make mistakes.

Off you go and enjoy it then.

Dying starter probably wrecked the battery due to over current.
