That's good to know Tim. Is your X5 a facelift model. Mine is a prefacelift so I guess the filter is in the engine bay. I'm not with the car today so can't check for myself until later

Really...it's feckin cold out there and you did that in a morning! Must be getting soft as it has to double figure temp for me to crawl about under the car. It's snowing here now as well
Mine's not got running boards...does that make it easier or no difference at all to get the bottom panel off?

Mines not got running boards on either and from what I've seen it doesn't make a difference if they have or not , just remove the panel from underneath it's not a bad job to do .
I saw a YouTube video where you can take the metal guard off by drilling out the rivets to gain access to the filter , it's a good idea tbh and will save a little time.

I read something that said part of the side trim had to come off...or at least those with sidesteps. IS that not the case then when without steps.....just lots of screws?
This ins't a diesel but does it represent the panel you had to take off? The side nearest the running board intrigues, do they pass through two panels?

There's a separate panel/undertray which can be removed consisting of 2 no 13 mm head size bolts in the prop shaft tunnel 2 no 13 mm nuts in the same location 1 no 13 mm bolt at the front of the tray 3no 13 mm bolts concealed in recesses down the other side and 1 no 13 mm bolt hidden behind a little panel Just in front of the rear wheel and various 8 mm and 10 mm speed screws , 3no speed screws in the exhaust heat shield and I think that was it .

If you look at the picture the tin guard can be removed if you take the 4 bolts out and grind or drill the rivets out and then you can gain access , then re-rivit the plate back on .
