Swapping out the Air-Con Pusher Fan...

Post by X5-D-Sport » Fri Apr 10, 2015 1:59 pm

Hi people,

Before I start pulling the machine to bits or ordering parts...

Can the Air-Con front fan be removed without losing coolant and removing the whole Rad ?

My AC fan is dead, and I have ideas of fitting a similar unit & "making" one fit from another BMW model of the same fan diameter if possible - because they are £100 cheaper for a used item from another vehicle other than X5.

All I need is the fan & motor... not all the surround bits

If your pre-facelift then I know for a fact to remove the pusher fan you have to remove the front bumper. Sounds bad but in reality its not - would advise having a second pair of hands to help though as the leads to the PDC sensors and fog lights are not that long and need to be disconnected.

I would urge caution trying to fit a non standard fan. They are not simple on / off units. The speed of the fan is controlled depending on various conditions / temperatures.  - Note the 3 wires not 2 going to the fan. If you suspect its dead, get someone to switch on the ignition for you while you watch the fan, it should self test on ignition on which is going upto half speed for a few seconds. If it dances back and forth its shot.

Hi,
Mine IS a 2004 Face lift, so I'm hoping to not have to remove the bumper - possibly ?

Will do the Dancing-Fan test later .

many thanks.

I did the test, the fan doesn't budge a single mm...

So maybe the fan is OK, and it's just not getting power ?

I swapped out a selection of fuses... still dead !

Whats  next to look for ?

Is there a plug on the lead or fan body. I would be checking for voltage there., does the Aircon actually get cold?
If it's not getting cold when your driving down the road , you may have other problems like low gas , gas pressure, fan pressure switch etc etc
