Got any more details?  Which versions and how does this occur?

X3 e83 atc 400 all cars, does not matter what engine or gearbox;  x5 e53 atc 500 all same as x3; x5 e70 x6 e71 2007-2009 atc 700. Will put more details later.

Looks horrendous!  Mine is an ATC450 - whatever the difference in that might actually mean though, and not in your date range which points to the pre-LCI E70 and 6-speed E71 variants perhaps?  The ATC450 went in from 09/2009 onwards.

Look forward to more details.

Well, pictures refers to first gen. xdrive system from 2003-2009. After that is 2gen started with atc 450 then 45L 35L etc. Different actuator motor, diff design. Internet search tells you that if you got 3 lights: abs, 4x4,  brakelight to spin plastic gear inside actuator motor or change for some carbon fibre one. From my experience and i did round 100 transfer boxes so far, plastic gear brakes when transfer box is gone. And now, when you spin or change gear that puts even more pressure on clutch pack and all other parts inside transfer box.

If things were meant to be easy, then I will soon complicate them....
Please note...
Anything I say is only from my personal experience and knowledge..
I don't assume to know everything, and know there is a lot I don't know..
But then I could be talking bollox.. O:-)

:))  It does read a little like "the eagles fly at dawn" :))...sorry :-[

I think it means...Searching the Internet reveals a potential cheap fix if the following three conditions happen at the same time

Those conditions are 3 lights: abs, 4x4,  brakelight

The fix apprently is to change the rotational position of a plastic gear inside the transfer case such that worn teeth are now replaced with good teeth

Ahhh.....right......well that makes all the difference...... ??? ???

So is it when you have the ABS operating, are attempting a handbrake turn and have the traction control off.....or.....?

I guess it means if you have an ABS/DSC warning and the brake fail warning at the same time?
