Hi all,
First time on the forum and I need some help.
I drive a 2009 X5 35d , I had two front tyres fitted by kwik fit in April 2015 and found out today that they fitted 2 different tyre sizes on the same axle. 285 45 19 on the drivers side and 255 55 19 on the passenger side.
Can this cause any long term damage ?? Are there any checks I should carry out ?? I have a meeting with the manager on Monday and would like to go prepared.
On another note I also have a parking break failure, this happened yesterday is there anyway this could be a consequence of the wrong tyres.
Thx in advance

Help !!!... 2 different tyres fitted onto same axle
Re: Help !!!... 2 different tyres fitted onto same axle
hi those sizes are both incorrect for an X5 the front wheels if 19" are 255/50/19 the rears are normally staggered and are 285/45/19 although some X5 s had 255/50/19 alround but they are usually a winter tyre fitment .
Check if the havent put a rear wheel on the front by mistake as they are dished quite a bit so different to the front wheels which are fairly flat .
Most Range Rovers or Discoverys use 255/55/19 so shouldnt even be on your car ! I would call in your local BMW dealer to check the Tranfer boxes as you have been running tyres witha 10mm difference which is a big deal in tyres . Replacing the transfer boxes is thousands which wouldnt be covered by warranty !
It is not as easy as just putting 2 new tyres on and sending you on your way , the car needs a very specialist check as it could bite you very severely in a few months time .
Tell the Manager it is their responsibility to sort this and cover all costs ! Good luck

Jeez.....if I were you I would be holding Kwik Fit liable for any damage too! That sort of error just should not have happened - EVER. Not something I would ever expect to look for and just shows how bad that chain really is.
The handbrake failure is unlikely to be caused by that, or do you mean that 'P' won't engage on the auto transmission now? That might be as a result of their incompetence, but given it's only a locking piece that drops into place to hold the gearbox immobile, I can't immediately see the mechanism by which a tyre size error could do it.
Be very, very careful about driving the car. As said above , it could cause a failure in either the diff on that axle or the transfer box. Your safest bet will be to put the spare on the incorrectly sized side as that will get the rolling diameter back in spec - albeit limiting your speed to 50mph too.
Personally I would ask Sh!t Fit to send a mobile team out and sort it out at their expense. If they refuse then tell them you hold them liable for the several thousand pound repair bill if anything breaks!

Hi Sid10, you are correct the tyre is 255/50/19 not 255/55/19 my mistake. Thanks for the advice I'll get BMW to look over it, i'm expecting Kwik fit to cover the cost of the inspection and any subsequent work required. thanks for your help

Thanks Colin, I wasn't aware it could cause a problem, kwik fit quickly accepted responsibility and agreed to change the tyre. I thank God that I thought to seek advice before letting them change the tyre, otherwise if anything happened in the future it would be difficult to prove it was their (Kwik fits) fault. I will keep you informed thanks for responding

Thank you x5 sport, The break message says "parking break failure" and it maybe unrelated i just thought I'd check. I'll take it to have it looked at tomorrow. Thanks for responding
