Re: coolant dripping off gearbox
I would take the engine covers off the top of the engine, I know several members have had heater hoses burst ar the rear of the engines, these have mainly been on the V8's I think.
Do a search on engine hoses via the search button on the forum.

Re: coolant dripping off gearbox
Mine (03 4.4) started drinking coolant suddenly (was topping it up every couple of weeks when I got the warning on the dash) and it was going in for a service at the time so asked the garage to investigate.
Turned out it was the expansion tank leaking (you could see crusty coolant residue on the underside.
Coolant was leaking and dripping down ending up on the gearbox.
New tank fitted and a few weeks later all is well.
I think the cooling system (hoses especially) are a weak spot on E53's - the garage said that often diagnosing what the problem is can be tricky. Luckily mine was obvious.
Worth checking the easy / obvious first and then going from there.
