Feels like a new car

Post by andym3 » Thu Oct 08, 2015 10:39 pm

I've had all my rear trailer arm bushes changed and rear control arm, as well as the front wishbone, anti roll bar links, lower ball joints and track rod ends! My car had developed a rear suspension squeak which has now gone!  :)
Once this was done I had the 4 wheel alignment done, its like a new car!  8)
Also today I had the pleasure of changing the rear handbrake shoes!  ;)

I have been considering this work for some time - my car is pretty old now and rather than wait for something to fail, I was considering some preventative maintenance on all of these consumable / soft parts.

Did you do the work yourself? I was going to just pass mine on to the Main Dealer to do.

I done the front myself, but the rear I paid a garage as I don't have a press! If you take it to a main dealer they will only sell you whole new rear swing arms which are about £400 each! Where you can buy the bushes to fit the swing arm off eBay for cheap & the garage I used charged £200 to fit!
Well worth doing though! Thought my car was smooth anyway but now these have been changed feels like new!

I need some of that, car done 110k and is feeling like it has. Pretty sure front control arms are gone as the steering has a lot of play and can hear a knocking noise if I just to a start/stop.

What's the sign for getting any of the other bits changed or you did as a preventative?

Only reluctance to getting this done is that the X has now been reduced to very little mileage.

I changed the fronts as there was a nocking noise! Thought it was a worn roll bar link so changed them & noise still there & then discovered it was the lower ball joint, so thought sod it & just changed the lot!  :))

The rear I changed as I was going through rear tyres, went to get the four wheel alignment done but all the adjustment bolts were seized so couldn't be done! So when I was under car trying to free bolts off I noticed the bushes looked shot so changed bolts & bushes then got 4 wheel alignment done!  8)
