Self levelling suspension

Post by themoog » Wed Nov 04, 2015 9:06 pm

My E53 has the air bags on the rear only. If i were to reverse up a small ramp, then jack the front up until the car was level ( front wheels hanging) and start the engine, would the rear air bags lift the rear up ?
The reason l ask is because when I do my trans service that is how I was going to raise the car. I need to keep it level.

Sounds bl@@dy dangerous to me!  You'll need very good chocks and brakes to prevent the car trying to roll down the slope!  Why not put the rear on proper wheel ramps and then jack up?  At least the rear wheels will be on a level surface and you can block them from moving.

Ramps aren't that expensive compared to a 2T steel behemoth trying to run away downslope!
:ant: Never anthropomorphise computers. They hate that.

I agree it sounds more risky than it is. Its a shallow ramp on which I am going to reverse the car up- only so the wheels are maybe 3" higher than the level ground on which the rest of the car is on. Handbrake on, wheels chocked. Then I wil jack the front up to level the car and put on axle stands. However, this means that the front suspension is extended a bit and that where the question about the self leveling... Ah wait a minute - the car will be level! Ive just answered my own question...

Just get 4 ramps.... Live longer that way.... and the vehicle will be level.

Getting crushed under 2.5 tonnes of X5 is far worse than the £35 expense of the extra two ramps....

and it will cost more for your burial, the headstone, the shiny wooden box for your squashed broken corpse... & the flowers on your grave ........
