3.0d temp gauge

Post by mattyp » Sat Nov 21, 2015 6:25 pm

My temp gauge reed just under the quarter mark on the gauge. Is this normal for a 3.0d?

No.  Thermostat is stuck open.

Got this on mine, but moves between 1/4 mark and just under 1/2 mark depending on conditions... Think mine needs changin too. (Normal is 1/2 way mark once up to optimum temp on any car i've ever owned)

Very common as the cars age.  Might be guidance about changing them on the forum.

When the weather is as cold as it is my temp gauge sits just over the 1/4, in summer closer to 1/2!
If I had a problem with my thermostat wouldn't the heater not work?  :-[

Sounds like the thermostat to me, it should reach and stay at the 1/2 way mark whatever the weather after a good run, may take longer to warm up though.

I have no issues and the heater is warm after about 5mins of driving!

Different pumped and controlled circuits and the heater air runs at a lower temperature - well below coolant temp.  The idea of the stat is that the temp gauge doesn't move regardless of the air temp - whether hot or cold.  My E53 stayed centred all the time frosty or baking.

Look up hidden menu, this can give you the coolant temperature . The BMW gauge will stay central usually between 95 - 110 degrees, the hidden menu will give you accurate coolant temperature.
I think guessing from my poor memory thermostats tend to hold 95 / 97 degrees.
I suspected mine on the 3 er was stuck open, but it's just taking a lot longer to get up there but always settles at 97 degs C

Are you planning on changing out the water pump or coolant while you're there mate?

I think i'm going to need to do mine at some point too, so let us know how things go...

Changed the stat and put new coolant in, it's a bit tight for space changing it. Now the gauge sits at halfway now  :)
