Detachable towbar

Post by lonnard » Tue Nov 24, 2015 12:12 pm

I have just bought a 2005 X5 sport and it has a locking detachable towbar to which I have no key,
Is there any way I can get this sorted ?

Have you had a REALLY good look under the boot floor its a tiny red handled key. It's usually kept there somewhere.

Is the tow bar locked? if not it will still unclip and clip back in etc, its only an issue if its locked into place.  Try PF jones for a replacement key.

Have a look in the book for the tow bar too.  If you are really lucky the owner will have put the number in a box inside the cover.

Might be a faint hope, but....... :)

I think the number is on the lock itself so you should be able to get a replacement.

What make is is?

I have a Witter detachable, which I thought didn't have a key when I first bought the car a couple of years ago. There was a small code on the silver portion of the lock where the key enters. I Witter a call and gave them the number; they were happy to send one out in the post.

Fortunately, I found that a key had been hidden away in the boot by the previous owner when I had a good rummage around.

That's the Westfalia one.  Is the Witter the same?  I've only used the former, hence asking.

No, the Witter one is more like a conventional key.

The one pictured above is also the same design used on the Land Rover / Range Rover detachable towbars.
