Need ideas..

Post by themoog » Thu Dec 03, 2015 2:16 pm

For some bizarre reason I thought I would replace the radius arm bushes today. All well and good but I couldn't separate the arm from the ball joint.
Anyone got any ideas? My joint puller wont fit and bashing the side of the joint didnt release it. I had to put it all back together for another day as I ran out of time. Maybe I wasnt hitting it hard enough....

Probably need to get some heat on it, maybe a blowtorch or oxy acetylene . Good luck

Ill be back on it tomorrow. The other X5 is in for an MOT so ill ask the garage owner if he has a straight puller i can borrow. If not, ive had an idea involving my trolley jack..

Chuffing disaster.. No matter what I did the joint would not separate. I went to undo the two torx bolts that hold the ball joint to the hub carrier and the first just snapped straight off.
I just put it all back together and my local garage can have it.
The other car failed mot on a cv gaitor split as well. Its ok tho as my fridge is full of San Miguel.

You actually need to remove the hub and then get a large hammer & just hit it as hard as you can! It will come out!
As for the snapped bolt, that will need drilling out & the re-thread the hole!

A horrible job to do, as you've already discovered!  ;)
