Various software/hardware changes were made during the life of the car.  If you have a look on Realoem you'll see the module part numbers and when they were introduced/replaced.  Updates were made until close to production ending in 2006.

I bought a Blue-tooth receiver built in to an audio tape-cassette, that receives the music from my phone, and sends it to the car via the cassette machine behind the Nav-Unit... this works fine & was a simply cheap fix.

The pukka receiver would be the way to go if I knew where to start looking for such a thing...

X5-Sport... where & what is the device you are referring too ?

I think the Bluetooth function is within the Telephone Control Unit mounted in the left rear boot.

Even the last version will only give you limited connectivity & functions.  You may be able to make and receive calls but there may be problems with the address books/contacts.  Some phones are better than others.

BMW made a complete hash of Bluetooth and phone compatibility on the E53.  There are something like 14 different versions of the TCU whilst they tried to sort it out.  Even media streaming via Bluetooth took until 2010 to sort on the E70/71 and that implementation isn't good either.

You will need to clear down all existing pairings in order to make a slot for your phone.  Only 4 can be stored and many owners don't clear them before selling the car.

Not forgetting that the prior unit known as the "ULF" had 13 generations to it.

AFAIK none had Bluetooth audio / streaming.

I have the 1st gen in mine and I have had no problems with HTC or more surprisingly iPhone 6!!
Even the phone book works!!

The more modern phones particularly those running Android suffer more with connectivity, apparently power to the Bluetooth antenna is reduced to preserve battery power.
The X5 has its Bluetooth antenna on top of the multimedia stack in the boot. When I changed phones the phone would connect to the car but drop calls, after cursing BMW and their rubbish Bluetooth system I discovered that the issue was infact with the phones operating system (so damn Android seems to be V4.4.3 and above)
As a test I put the phone in the boot and during a drive up to Yorkshire I made and received several calls with no issue. My solution was to re position the cars Bluetooth antenna up behind the rear seat and touch wood it seems to have worked for me.

Still cant stream music so I use an FM transmitter for the Ipod

In our E46 vert the Bluetooth antenna is inside the rear bumper!  Not exactly much use either as it needs to be inside the car....or so one would have thought.
