we have a 2002 3.0d X5 and was wondering if I could put the 4.6 is clocks in without any issues

No you can't. The dash modules are vehicle type specific, some data held in it is single car specific.
Different rev range and calibrations. The 4.6 also has warning lights not used by the 3.0d and vice versa. You will also get a 'tamper' warning dot showing as the dash is not the one that came with the car. You will need to recode the dash with the correct mileage as well.
All this assumes that it might be plug and play, which AFAIK it isn't.
