Boosting TV signal?

Afternoon all,

I was wondering if anyone has managed to boost the TV reception in their E53? The TV function itself is really good, and I find myself using it a lot when waiting in the car, or just to entertain my 1 year old son when he’s in the car with me.

I never use the TV whilst travelling (I don’t have TV in motion enabled) but I often use it whilst parked. I was wondering whether anyone has managed to boost the TV reception signal, either by buying one of those ‘TV boosters’ designed for homes, or by back fitting another TV reception module, perhaps from the E70 if that was an option?

I Jack,
Not sure about boosting the signal... but I'd just like mine to work at all...

I think that because mine is a 2004 facelift vehicle it may still be an analogue machine & some how need to be converted to receive a digital signal - any one know anything about this ?.. as well as boosting the signal for Jack ?

I don't think its possible to fit the E70 system as the Bus system is different I believe. You may be able to boost the signal by changing antenna's. Whether that would make a noticeable difference is debatable digital TV is great if you are close to a transmitter but not reliable if you are on the edge or in a hilly area or heavily built up area.
You can add a Digi box to the analogue system its plug and play and works well. still have the signal issue though.

Is it possible to play a mobie dvd on the older 2004 X5 thru the dash screen & stereo ?

If you fit an AV Input Lead to your TV tuner you can add a DVD Player or Digital TV Box select Aux in the TV menu and you should see them. I dont know if you can have both fitted at the same time? never tried it
You still wont see any picture when driving unless you have TV in motion enabled

I had a mini PlayStation console connected through AV input for DVDs and PlayStation gaming ,tv in motion "tricked" by a inline module on my my E53 years ago and it's definately did the trick!

There was a way of coding as I remember by splicing into the ibus in the boot area and not sure there is a newer way to activate tv in motion now?

I’m not too fussed about TV in motion. I’m more bothered about receiving decent TV reception whilst I’m parked. How is an AV input lead fitted? Is this behind the screen itself or something to do with the AV inputs in the rear? I wouldn’t mind fitting a Playstation or something. So I can watch DVDs.

For parked up convenience, I bought a £60 11" portable DVD player that lives behind the passenger seat + a bunch of DVD's....

This was some years ago and I remember all the connection were made in the boot as well as power supply for the Ps console.

The AV Lead fits to the TV tuner in the boot, after you have dug down to the TV tuner unplug the Blue connector plug the AV lead in and plug the Blue plug back into the other end of the AV lead. Depending which lead you brought you will now have a number of connections Video/Sound in Video/Sound out and Reverse Camera input.
On the TV screen you should find Aux, select it and you will see the device you have connected. My X5 has a digital tuner but I couldn't get it to tune reliably so fitted a cheap digi box I used the BMW antenna connections for neatness and power from the radio connector, been in there 2 years now and I have to admit very little used.
