Dash lights
Dash lights
Hi all, not been on the site for a wile due to working away. Wile I was away I let a family member use my x5 and there is a couple issues on my return, he said that he didn't see a speed bump till very late and braked very hard and after going over speed bump some lights came on the dash,
1) abs.
2) ! Symbol)
3) one other iv not had chance to check myself yet but think they are all linked as they came on together, I'm thinking a sensor has been dislodged or damaged, or something along them lines, any suggestions...
the central locking has stopped working on the key fob, also the central locking button on centre console does not work.
Thanks in advance and my apologies for first post in a wile being a bombardment of questions. ALSO APOLOGIES FOR POSTING IN WRONG SECTION. :-[

Re: Dash lights
OMG ... some one broke your favourite toy...
No one will ever treat you car decently... I'd never allow any one else to use my X5 after a similar occurrence....
my partner used mine for 2 days to ferry her kids on the school run...
it came back with foot scrapes on the dash, a cracked centre console where the little bastards climbed thru from the front to rear, and creased the outer door edge with a trapped seat belt buckle.... and one of them cut thru the rear leather seat surface with a shoe buckle...and poured drinks all over the floor + crispes ground into the carpets...
and
my partner managed to scrape both front & rear bumpers on a lamp post while doing a 3 point trun in a narrow road...
all this in just 2 days...and they are not even my sodding kids...
re your warnings on the dash....
to get these faults, the vehicle must have become air-bourne & come down with a hell of a crash...
Get the "friend" to have it fixed... and see how much of a friend they really are ??
Moral of the story... friend or no friend.... No One will give YOUR car the respect or care that you do.
dont lend it ever again...

Re: Dash lights
Yes tell me bout it, I new it was a mistake but like a proper doughnut I still let them use it, oh yes he will pay with blood if need be, >:D I just don't want to take to main steeler, I think best thing I can do is get faults read, iv got inpa b cable diagnostics reading software but not really sure how to use it properly, lol. I don't mind doing mechanics but software different ball game for me. So probably Indy garage for fault reading and replace parts myself, (I no they been done to my satisfaction then) and any issues caused Or breakages its caused by me.

If things were meant to be easy, then I will soon complicate them....

Re: Dash lights
How odd. A few weeks ago i was chatting to our dog sitter about his X5 he owned a few years ago. Anyway he was ranting on about the ! + abs light on the dash after crashing into a kerb or something. A dealer couldnt find the fault and he eventually fixed by chance when he jacked up the rear of the car to take a look or something. Apparently it was the self levelling that threw the lights for some reason after the thump. I dont know more than that but i may call him to elaborate.
Re: Dash lights
Hi themoog, thanks kindly for your reply, Sounds like a good starting point, before I book it in anywhere I think I might jack up front/rear/all corners and have a good visual to see if there is anything that stands out, with a bit of luck I might even see the fault, ( optimistic I no, ha) thanks again all feedback is very much appreciated.

Re: Dash lights
Taking into account the weather we have been having it is worth checking the connection boxes in the wheel wells.
They can get full of crud

Re: Dash lights
There are self-levelling 'crank-arm' sensors under the car. Two only. I think it's front right, rear left, but could be the other way around. Have a search on here to confirm which sides on which axle , but if one arm has broken that would cause the problem.
The kind of shock you are talking about certainly suggests at least one have been overloaded - quite likely the front.
If it's knocked that out then the tracking could well have been thrown so needs checking or you will start seeing tyre scrubbing.
Realoem piccie of parts here.

Re: Dash lights
Yes will spend good hour or so checking wiring looms/connectors/sensors and just scrutinising underside and inner arches and fingers crossed spot something broke or out of place.
Regarding the central locking (long shot I no) but if the centre console button has failed will it affect the fob central locking function. The tailgate still works on fob.
Is there a hard reset procedure I can do, The Range Rover sport I have has a function were if the battery is disconnected and I connect + & - battery wires together for a very short period it resets all the electrics.

Re: Dash lights
The electrics 'reset' is the standard "take two aspirin and call me in the morning" approach in BMWs too. 30 minutes will do it.
Could just be wires knocked out of the sockets? There is also a key reset procedure listed on the site.

Re: Dash lights
I got more info about this fault. The chap who had a similar problem said he hit a kerb. By pure chance it was was fixed when he jacked up the whole rear of the car to do something with the wheels. When lowed back down it was fine. It was something to do with the suspension compressor not reacting quick enough to the bump which in turn threw faults. By lifting and leveling the rear it sort of reset it.
Might be worth a try. Go to a garage and get it lifted up on jack points so the front is done at the same time- coils I know but could be level sensor.
