3.o D-Sport silencer internals
Any one got an old silencer spare ?
OR
had one apart ?
OR
have a picky or diagram of the guts of these silencers ?
I want to possibly open my rear silencers up, re-vent the exhaust out thru the rear valence as per the V8's.
The diesels were vented under the vehicle as a ££ saving exercise so that a chromed tail pipe was not necessary at manufacture.... but it's bland & boring.
I don't want the expense of a full aftermarket system if I can cut open one side of the existing silencer, re-route the output & seam weld them back up again.
I've done work on exhaust technology in the past, so I'm aware of all the back pressure nonsense & resonance etc.... just want to make them more appealing to look at & have functional tail pipes.
Any pics or diagrams would be helpful.

E53 diesel tail pipes are pointed downwards because of the particulate matter it spits out in loads.. me thinks.. as this is the pre-DPF era.
guess they thought it's better on the tarmac than on any ladies who might be standing behind in white dresses for instance..

mmmm maybe... but in theory the CAT Converter is there to remove the particulates...
And any one stood behind any car exhaust will get splattered to some degree...
Personally... not worried about the white dresses... if it's OK for every other diesel on the street, it's OK for mine lol.

Just cut the boxes out and put stright through pipes out the bumper...
Admittedly might have a slight issue with MOT, but what the hey????!!!
>:D

If things were meant to be easy, then I will soon complicate them....
Please note...
Anything I say is only from my personal experience and knowledge..
I don't assume to know everything, and know there is a lot I don't know..
But then I could be talking bollox.. O:-)

X5-D-Sport Salisbury
Not sure if your anywhere near me, but I have the rear silencers from my 2005 3.0d sitting in my shed that your welcome to have, they are in very good condition

The Cat is for emissions, not particulates. Exhausts were aimed downwards due to only meeting EU3.
You can fit 'fake' tailpipes with a bit of welding though. Changing the boxes can affect the turbo back pressure unless you keep the original pipe diameters into the silencers.
New versions (EU4/5/6) have combined Cat/DPF systems, some with AdBlue too. No downward pointing pipes.

Hi Olli,
Funnily enough Im in Salisbury lol... where are you ?
I contemplated runningb the pipe straight thru the silencer & Out the back ...
But...
There would be no back pressure & resonance to make the tuned length effective.
with a straight thru pipe, it would probably lose 20% of power & economy.....
so, by gently easing the gas flow & redirecting the outlet internally to the rear of the silencer giving a small amount of rumble.. but still decent performance.
Im fairly sure I can rework the silencers ok... but it would be best to do the job on 2 spare units in advance... then swap them out H reduce risks of buggering the vehicle up.

Yeah should have noticed that one, I am in Sussex, between Brighton and Gatwick airport, like I say your if you want them bud. I swapped mine out for the silencers from the 4.8is, little bit of fettling and they bolted up easy, I know that there can be issues with performance etc and was going to get mine mapped to correct anything, but have to say they have made not one noticeable difference to the performance of the car, they look good and although don't sound anything like a v8 do have a nice burble to them on start up and idle and maybe ever so slightly louder when giving it beans.

Hi Olli,
That sounds good... may be thw easiest route... V8 silencers...
I think I will go this route...
many thanks for the info

Linky to when I fitted mine.
http://xdrivers.co.uk/forum/index.php/t ... #msg122992
I think the diameters were slightly different, but was able to sleeve the 4.8 over the existing system,
Probably got some pics of it from underneath if needed
