Rattle at the rear.

Post by themoog » Sun May 08, 2016 7:52 pm

For a while I have had a metallic rattle coming from the rear of the car. I narrowed it down to the parking brake shoes on the offside.
Anyway, i took it apart today to find out what was loose. It was the shoes banging around. The retaining pins had pulled through the backplate due to a bit of corrosion and had been bouncing around inside the drum. They must have been caught up in there as they were both bent at nearly 90'...
Not being able to get new backplates on a Sunday afternoon I had to come up with a cunning plan..
First, I straightened the pins. Then i shortened the retaining springs slightly so the pin could be pushed further through the backplate where I put some small washers that I had 'ovaled'. This enabled the pin to be pushed in and twisted as normal- albeit very fiddly- through the plate and locking on my washers.
Fixed.
I did think the shoes would be in pieces but they were ok. All I need to do now is set up the handbrake properly as its a bit rubbish.
After the colossal bill for the timing chain guide repair last week I need to fix any issues with as little cost as possible.
