mot fail today.....

Post by the shreksta » Thu Oct 13, 2016 6:48 pm

was dreading the mot today on the x5 but all it failed on was a corroded from brake pipe, so they are doing it next week for me for £55 and a free re-test

not bad for a near 13 year old x5 with 111,000 on the clock, the guy said there was nothing else wrong at all

love my x5 me do :)

Hi

As you say that's not too bad for a 13 yr old car. Not sure if in rear or front.

Howver, Some forum members have found the rear brake pipes on both side corrode so it may be worth for piece of mind getting them to double check the other side when the cars in for one side as the other probably not far behind.

Im always curious as to why folk "dread" the MOT. For two reasons - firstly, there's a pile of stuff you can check yoursel. Secondly a good relationship with your local garage on any given repai and they can give it a simple visual check. For example, if they have it up on the ramps I ask them to check for cv boot splits and so on, or sometimes I find a reason to chat to them and look myself.

Yes of course neither of those options will catch everything, but a head start lets you plan for the repairs - perhaps due to financial or timing constraints etc.if we know certain areas are potentially problematic then we should ho looking for those.  MOTs often throw up something we dont expect, but if we take our vehicles condition seriously, (lets face it by the very fact we frequent this forum makes us "enthusiasts") and if we value the safety of ourselves and others, we shouldn't pin everything on a once a year check.

All easier said than done I know, and to be clear Im not being critical of any individual's stance to the maintenance of their own vehicle.

I used to enjoy going under the car the with MOT Testers but in these days of 'elf and safetee' it's not as easy as it was

Agree Smee, I've done plenty maintenance and upgrades to my vehicle this year - I'm just really fearful of something being thrown up at the MOT that I have not expected. I'm having a MOT pre-check done at A1BN end of October too.

I'm also new to the UK so this will be my first MOT experience....  :o

I'm not fearfull of the MOT, I've just replaced the rear discs and pads on the wife's TT today as it's going in on Monday for the MOT. She took it into National tyres to get a slow puncture sorted and they told her the rear brakes were down to the metal, and the rear discs were knackered. He strongly advised her to not drive it home ! And they could do the job for £250 + VAT.

Hi

It sounds like you had fun, but at least you now have the tools for next time around, and you saved yourself some money as well
