Can I remove bulk-head for access n?

Post by jonnyivy » Mon Nov 21, 2016 6:00 pm

Hi,

The X5 (3l Diesel ) wouldn't start this morniong having 4 glow-plugs down.
Decided to give it a go to change them so followed diagrams on here and other places. Worst part for me was trying to slide my hand down the back of the engine to get to the last nuts and dis-connect wire looms. It got kinda dark by the time I put the manifold back in place but I'm dreading tomorrow trying to allocate where my hand will go to get these few things back on. Just wondering if I can remove the bulkhead just beyond the rear of the engine to gain a few inches for access ??

If you mean the scuttle for the a/c then yes you can remove it.  It makes life a lot easier.  I seem to remember it is only about 4 bolts, but I did mine several years ago now.  You need to remove the covers for the micro filter (twist locks) and then having removed them, the rubbers and the filter itself you can see everything.

Thanks for that,...I'll get that removed in the morning, make things easier,.....  think I might need that extra few inches as I took a hard plastic breather type pipe off and cant seem to see where it goes back onto !!
Hindsight , it would have been so much easier if I'd known to take this shelf off,...hey ho !!

Yup,...easily removed ,...darned wish I'd thought about that,....  had to lift manifold off again anyway as I found out it wasn't my glow plugs that were faulty it was the control box for them.
Ordered a new one this morning after testing output s and it was delivered to my local factors at 1.30,....had it back on and everything replaced by 3 oclock. Started first turn of the key,...fingers crossed it will do the same when the temp gets down below zero some morning...

Hi jonny

Hope it works after your hard work, are you in siberia or something? Mine according to the scanner has 5 dead glow plugs and starts on the button...

Hah,... maybe not Siberia ,..but Scotland among the hills gets pretty damned damp and cold.
It was minus 8 on Monday morning and it just didn't have that oomph to kick into life. I tried cranking for 10 seconds or so , maybe 3 times then left it. Tried again half an hour later and it fired after a couple of attempts.
Strangely enough mines came up with the diagnosis of having no's 1, 2 , 3  and 4 glow plugs out (open circuit) but only when I had them out did I check them and they were all ok. ( maybe the fault codes were in the history and they were changed by previous owner and never erased ?).
Then I decided to test the leads coming from the control box,... these were showing various readings from .3 to about 3.5. ( cant remember exactly)... but when I turned the key this afternoon it fired on a half-turn.....
Fingers crossed I have mended something that does the engine good for a while....  and on hind-sight I rather enjoyed taking the parts off and having no nuts/bolts left over after rebuilding it !

Cheers.

There was some talk on another thread that the glow plug controller tends to go as well, sure the gurus will be on soon to verify or not

Happy to report that it was minus 3 this morning ,..I went out first to try the car and it started better than ever before,...one turn of the starter and away it fired. Noticed there wasn't the usual plumes of white smoke either.
That was with the old glow-plugs back in.... ( took new ones back for refund..I'm Scottish ! )
Happy days....
