Front top mount

Post by themoog » Wed Nov 30, 2016 9:20 pm

What's a failed front top mount sound like? I'm getting a real strange grinding noise from behind steering/ top of dash when I turn. It's louder if I'm braking and turning due to the weight transfer. Could that be what's making the noise?

Check your outer cv joints.... I had a similar noise that turned out to be the joint (I found out when it exploded)

I don't think its a CV as it does it when stationary as well. Doesn't do it all the time.

We I had a look this morning as it was making a load of noise. It may well be the outer cv as the boot has become detached from the hub and has possibly lost grease/ let in dirt. Local garage today to get it on the lift I think.

when i had the noise on mine i stripped down the front strut and replaced the mount / springs
but the noise was still there ..... boxing day last year the cv gave in and stranded the car outside a busy retail park
initially i thought the gearbox had given in until i noticed 2 large ball bearings rolling down the road I have never been so relieved to be wrong before

(btw would you believe that you can actually tow an x5 with a 1.6 auto fiesta)

I nipped in earlier and he recons its a ball joint which I tend to agree with. I'm goin back later to get it up in the air to make sure.

Well, we had it up un the ramp. Put the CV boot back on properly. There was no noise at all.. He still thinks its a dry ball joint so what I'm going to do is wait to see if it does it again and then ill inject some lubricant into each of the boots until it shuts up. One thing we did notice was the track rod arms that bolt to the rack under the long rubber boots need replacing.
When it was on my drive and my 7yr old was steering left and right the creaking was coming from behind the brake caliper so it definitely not the top mount. And the outside temp has gone up so wonder if that has anything to do with it.. I don't like my cars going wrong.
The other one has started creaking and clunking at the rear when pulling away so I suspect chassis bushings.. Grr.
