3.0d 2004 x5 the engine runs cold even after 20 mins or driving

Hey guys,

I bought this car last week and just noticed the temp gauge never goes above the first marker thats 1/3 of the way. Also I am getting low mpg, 26-27mpg going at 40-70mph shouldnt be around 30-35mpg? is that related to thermostat keeping the engine run cooler?

If its the thermostat then should I buy it from eurocarparts?

thermostat was the cause on my 3.0 (but its petrol)
if you can get one get a febi one they seem to be taking genuine thermostats and putting them in their boxes (after grinding the original numbers / markings off)

febi part number is 32648

Which part of the country are you in? My temp gauge does run colder it the air is cold outside so if youre oop north it may be be right. What has the outside temp been when you were driving. Last week it was 1c when i drove for four hours and the temp gauge was liw. Yesterday it was 6c and it was showing normal temp

I am in North Wales, I tested it last night outside temp was around 3 and slightly raining. Ok i'll do some more testing in the next few days.

Thermostat.

Eurocarparts should be fine.  My temperature never dropped below halfway regardless of OAT.  That's the purpose of the stat - to maintain the correct temp at all times within the car design spec limits.

Ok thanks everyone...its going for service this thursday so I'll ask them to check the thermostat too.

Deffo thermostat,  mine was doing the same.

Shouldn't matter where in the uk u are, if you were in Norway there might be a different grade of stat available possibly.
